Gracie: When you put it that way it just makes it sound like itās a load of luck and a little bit of paying attention in Defense Against the Dark Arts. And maybe, maybe a tiny bit of stupidity and willingness to go charging into things to protect the people you love.
Gracie: I know, I know. Is it terrible that I was secretly hoping youād say something different? Iām total rubbish at apologies. Just ask Hugo, I had to beg him to forgive me for not being able to tell him about Umbra existing the first time. Which ā oh yeah, I invited Hugo, sorry not sorry about it. I guess while Iāve already got you here, I might as well ask you the same question I asked him, which is uh⦠did your dad ever teach you how to fake speak Parseltongue, the way your Uncle Ron did in the second war?
Gracie: I really am sorry, Jay. But thereās so much more at stake for you guys as the alums, and I thought weād fly under the radar better if we left you out of it, at least at first. And I trust you ā Merlin knows we all trust you ā but whoās to say that telling one person now and assuming we all trust them canāt lead to the same happening later on down the line, but with someone we donāt all agree on, and someone that we canāt actually trust? I donāt want to be on the run like Lynn and Wilde, I want to be here, winning the Quidditch Cup!
Gracie: I wish I could take the credit for it being my idea, but it actually wasnāt. I got approached by someone else who was dumb enough to think IāD be a better leader than her. HA! As if. Maybe I should have just told her to do it in the first place, except everyone would eat her alive, sheās way too nice to take charge. But now I havenāt even started yet, and Iāve let Lynn down, Iāve let you down, Iāve let Rox and Lucy down ā and Merlin knows what Hugo will even think when he finds out what a mess Iāve made. I wanted to do teamwork; I wanted to start small with the people I know best and trust most, plus the people whoāve been attacked before, and it already blew up in my face. I guess I just never prepared for the part where things went to shit so soon. Even if I do apologize to Lily, who says she and Roseāll even care? I mean, what am I supposed to do, kick Rose out too if we canāt play nice and agree to all work together?
Gracie: Iām a mess, Cap, even with the pep talk. Which I appreciate, by the way. I just donāt know if I have what it takes to do it. You know I hate admitting defeat, and I donāt wanna fail, especially not when itās something that matters this much, but maybe I just need to go ahead and turn it over to Roxy now before I do more harm than good.
James: Honestly? A lot of it is. Maybe a bit more than paying a little attention in DADA, but yes. Maybe we don't know what the bloody hell we're doing, but protecting our people? That's more important. To all of us. To who was in the first group, to whoever ends up in this group you're going to be leading. No one would agree who didn't feel that need.
James: I don't expect you to be sorry about that, Gracie. He should be in the group. He should know how to defend himself. He should've been in Umbra from the start. You making the decision to include him proves you know what you're doing already. -Uh... well, we used to act like we could do it all the time, when we were kids. Just sorta hissed at each other, but he never really taught us how? Gave him a bit of a laugh, but I don't think he took us very seriously. Unless we actually said something that made sense and only he could understand it.... No idea. There's not a book on it, or something?
James: You really don't need to say sorry, stop that. I get it. It was a pretty hard situation the first time, remember? It's hard, when we've all got different schedules, and it's hard to have meetings when half a group is still at school. And with some of us working at the Ministry, it's just a tricky situation. So you're doing what works right now. It makes sense.
James: OI! You haven't let anyone down, alright? Families fight, friends fight-- once this calms down, everything will work itself out. You've just to got remind everyone why you're doing this. You don't all have to get along all the time-- it'd be a miracle if that actually happened, and Merlin knows I didn't agree with everything everyone said the first time around, and I wasn't agreed with a lot of the time either, but your goal is the same. If Rose and Lily don't accept any apologies you make-- you move on, and continue with what you've decided to do. Rose is willful and a bloody pain in the arse sometimes, but to protect Hugo, to protect other members of our family, I think she'd be willing to set aside any personal differences she might have with you.
James: You're not a mess. Maybe you've created a bit of a mess, and it seems like it'd be easier to just quit and go about your merry way, but think about it- would you have agreed to start it up in the first place if some part of you didn't think you could do it? When you got Captain of the team, did you have the same worries?
