and, sure, maybe their time in the slums was the worst. but gin was more terrified of the days she hardly saw ryuunosuke. days he came home much too late, much too exhausted. days when he was bruised and bloody and angry. at himself, most of all. at dazai, even when he couldn’t express it, and beat himself down for every insult dazai threw his way. gin remembered those days. the days she longed for the streets again, because at least there they were in everything together, and at least there the enemy was clear, and they knew what to do, and he would come home whole every night to gin. at least then she didn’t have to be afraid for ryuunosuke, for someone he sought after like it was all he could do. (and she hated the fact that maybe it really was all he had left to drive him forward). those days haunted her more than anything.
