Garifuna is a fascinating Afro-indigenous language, from a people with a unique culture and tumultuous history. The Garifuna people are descended from Africans and indigenous peoples of the Caribbean; primarily the Carib and Arawak. Originally inhabitants of St. Vincent, they were forcefully deported to Central America by the British in the 19th century, where they currently reside, spanning the Caribbean coast from Belize to Nicaragua.
