Head cannon: I feel like Afafrenfere was someone who focused his entire life on being a monk, his family pushing him into the limelight until he burned out and a shadow monk named Parbid showed him the peace in the shadows and they ran away together, fell in love but slowly to survive they ended up too far into the shadows and relying on people they shouldnât rely on or trust. Parbid probably had his own demons to fight and lost

Afa: "why don't you think I'd come back from nirvana? :("
Kane: "it's like.... have you ever been edged?"
Ambergris is team mom and Afafrenfere is her gay son.
messageinabottletofaerun said:He said in an interview Afafrenfere was openly gay. Considering that, though, he was being pretty vague about that in the books⌠other than that, the only char that was openly bi that comes to mind was Dahlia⌠the evil bi trope lurks here⌠:(
Yes, not to mention the ânymphomaniac bisexualâ stereotype, and the fact that her sex-obsession was pretty clearly a product of trauma but was passed off as willful. Dahlia is just a really problematic character all around, and on top of it all, her bisexuality seemed pretty strongly in service of the het male gaze to me. There were several other, very brief female/female sexual encounters in the series, but never any male/male ones, which seems very much in the âfanserviceâ camp.Â
And yes Faffy was gay, but his sexuality was never actually addressed except in a throwaway comment about a (dead) male lover. He was never allowed to have a love interest in the context of the story, and his social status as a gay man in Faerun is never addressed in any way (nor is Dahliaâs status as a bisexual woman, realistically). Is this acceptable where heâs from? Do all of his companions understand this about him, how do they feel about it? Even if all the response is positive, someone is going to have something to say about the fact that he likes men, but nobody does. Even Faffy himself never brings it up.
It really irritated me when Bob hurriedly explained that Afafrenfereâs sexuality âdoesnât define himâ because I can tell you from experience that when cishets say âI donât like characters/people whose sexuality defines themâ what theyâre generally saying is âI like characters who are as deep in the closet as possible so I rarely, if ever, have to acknowledge that theyâre queer at all.â
