Not to completely go mad over Aequitas publicly and obsess over a seemingly-MacGuffin-esque-entity within the Wreckers Trilogy but I think there's something beautiful with how little we really know about Aequitas and its creation/how it actually operates, but this not-knowing manages to haunt the entire story. Aequitas is obviously and rather undeniably a symbol of guilt, tied very closely to Prowl's perception of the Autobot faction and his connection to its other creator, Tarantulas (I mean, Aequitas literally hangs over his head in SOTW sword of Damocles style), as well as it being Impactor's judge for his actions of Pova + the subsequent reason for Springer's promotion to leading the Wreckers. Which is all well and fine and true, but it fascinates me how much Aequitas is a literal representation of how these characters' guilt affects everybody else around them, looping others into this very destructive cycle Aequitas orbits. It causes Ironfist's revelation about the Wreckers via the truth about Pova, gives his subsequent death meaning, it becomes Verity's bargaining chip to get Prowl to take her seriously and help her, its the main reason for the Wreckers' downfall in LSOTW... even indirectly causing Prowl's disappearance in SOTW later on, involving Arcee in the events that follow.
What’s striking to me is how Aequitas exerts this gravitational pull without really ever fully revealing itself; it’s less a tangible thing and more a void everyone projects onto. Its existence defines the losses of so many characters within Wreckerstrilogy, and its absence is a catalyst that turns guilt into action. And this big collective search for Aequitas reads to me as just. such a massive big flag representation of grief. Aequitas is chock-full of it, what with it already being a big part of Prowl and Mesothulas' history + what predated Springer, and I think there's grief within itself, too-- the fact that so little is known about Aequitas but practically everybody within the story searching for it, looking for clues and references to what exactly it holds/where it could be everywhere. Most everyone within the story is actively looking for it, trying to recover something so many people died for. It almost feels like grieving? The process itself, if that makes sense...?
My heart aches a lot for Aequitas. I 100% fully understand why Aequitas was never really expanded upon beyond LSOTW and why it was used more as a maguffin-type objects in SOTW-- it didn't need to go beyond a past ethically dubious project that both Prowl and Mesothulas collaborated upon. But in my heart, I like to think of Aequitas as less a computer and more a large mind (and *coughs* an elder daughter), as Mesothulas' earliest experiment in translating artificial code into life through computing emotions, breaking down guilt, turning numbers into... something more of a soul? I think it's more than possible, frankly, with Aequitas and Springer being (as far as we know) back to back experiments. The idea always stuck with me that Springer might not've been Mesothulas' very first attempt at replicating the Cybertronian mind. I could totally see him use a new project as an excuse to begin dabbling in how machinery could understand feeling-- or maybe another way around, with Aequitas piquing Mesothulas' interest in recreating life with Springer.
I don't think it's a stretch to assume Prowl also played some kind of role in Aequitas' creation, beyond the concept behind her itself likely something first brought up by him. There's a link between the way we're told Aequitas ascerns guilt-- translating abstract concepts that are usually emotionally-driven (motivation, accountability) into mathematical algorithms-- and the way Prowl thinks about these sorts of things, the way he treats them (as something that could be calculated through hard statistics in the first place) that just reeks of... something being passed down. This is, of course, treated in the same way all Transformers-human connections are; a very distilled essence of something we're familiar with (the way fathers and daughters think alike) reframed through an alien lens (Prowl's hand in the creation of the Aequitas thought baby).
Do I think Aequitas is actually a fully realized mind, thoughts and all, and just didn't have the means communicate it? No. I think that she does think, in a slow, rudimentary (by transformers standards) way, but I also think there's something very beautiful in the almost of it. That she almost reaches the edge of consciousness. That, in the silence of her function, in the slow process of weighing guilt and blame and intangible ethical nuance, she brushes up against understanding. I don't think Mesothulas nor Prowl realized this, in the end. But in my heart something stirred when she was hooked up to Springer during Zero Point. In my heart something stirred after her complete download into Ironfist's mind -> the dataslug -> the hands of Verity...
(Small note here, but my shift to using she/her for Aequitas is largely motivated by my very staunch belief she holds some kind of Older Daughter thought mush, but also because she shares a namesake and strong ties to the Roman lady justice symbol. I miss her very very much.)

I know it was probably meant to be another ‘Springer just being That Cool’ moment but him completely breaking Aequitas while being hooked up to it during the Impactor trial… well… *you approach the little stand I have set up and above me a sign that previously read ‘transformers takes’ falls down and behind it is another sign that reads ‘ASK ME ABOUT MY AEQUITAS + SPRINGER SIBLINGESQUE CONNECTION AGENDA’*
