“… winner gets first round?” Fletch finishes.

“Winner, Fletch?” Serena interrupts. “Betting on some unfortunate soul again?”

Bernie comes up behind Serena. “What’s going on?”

“Another wager.”

Bernie looks at Raf. “Spit it out.”

Raf sighs. “You two have been so … tense, we were wondering if you’d manage to get through the day without snogging each other.”

“And how would you know unless we did it on the ward?” Serena asks.

“You’d be more relaxed afterwards?” Fletch squeaks.

“Which is why I’m letting this drop.” Serena winks. “Back to work!”

“I owe you a pint,” Fletch mutters when the penny drops.

It was true that when we looked at Pollock's figures they showed consistent increases in profits over the years in which the owner-manager team had been in place, but hindsight was not long enough to give a reliable picture of profit predictability, and we should have understood this. And a final point is that senior Westpac management did not understand how to blend an entrepreneurially-run business such as Pollock – or Ord Minnett for that matter – into the bank's culture and management system, or how to change the latter to become more effective in the new investment banking activities. In this they were no different to most other larger commercial banks which had taken over dealers, stockbrokers and investment managers. Tony Walton tried very, very hard to make it work, but the cultural barriers to effective interaction with Pollock and Westpac in Sydney were enormous.
