A stiff breeze over the North Atlantic
How much can you infer from an iPhone photo taken from 39000 feet of the surface of an ocean? I noticed what looked like whitecaps while peering down from the window seat when there was a break in the clouds, and snapped a shot using the Adobe Indigo app. The Indigo app can do a bit of superresolution by correcting for jitter, so I figured it might help to show the surf better. It didn't, but it did something better. With a little post processing in Photos, it turns out we can see the waves marching across the field of view! Said field of view is around 10º (because the photo was shot at 10x zoom, 5x optical and 2x digital, and according to Apple's tech specs, the FoV for the 5x lens is 20º). I can count around 40 wave crests from top left to bottom right. So combined with the altitude, trigonometry tells us that the wavelength, L, is ≈50-70 meters. The wind speed that causes the waves is √gL/2π, ≈9-10.5 m/s, or about 20-24 mph. Excellent sailing weather, just about perfect to push a square rigged ship right across the pond.
