People keep asking why Kate Spade killed herself her family keeps saying she suffered with mental illness until we except mental illness as a true health condition and advocate for those who are impacted and suffering from it we will not be able to proactively help those who are in dire situations. The shame associated with mental illness is despicable our Culture has said it is OK to suffer with other illnesses:heart condition, diabetes, cancer. Chronic illness but when someone suffers from mental illness we whisper and sometimes we stare rather than opening our arms in being a support system. Have you wondered how many around you are ill and you don't see it or choose not to see it. I think that's the question we should be asking ourselves today not how could she do it? The question is how can we help someone who wants to do it and encourage them, and let them know that their illness can be treated and that there is a support system and community! When I want to post partum 5 years ago I didn't even know what was going on but thank God I had a husband who by the grace of God was wise enough to know that something hormonal was happening he knew me well enough to know that it was not my normal and he was supportive enough not only to go to the doctors with me but to sit in support groups with me as I became clearer about what was going on in my life I had hope because I understood over time that post partum would pass however there are those who are suffering every minute of the day because they have a mental illness condition that will be with them for the rest of their lives but as I learned with the right treatment and support you can come through anything on top but for those who do not have these said resources sadly what we have seen with Kate Spade occurs every day across the world. When the news coverage stops and the mulier returns to their normal chaos of the day will we remember those around us and look for opportunities to support them or will we move along with are busy and consumed lives??????? #hope #suicideprevention #ADJUSTINGYOURCROWN
