#adiantum

According to Wikipedia, the common name derives from the fine black stems resembling human hair. I'd argue that that isn't the hair they were thinking of.

Obviously, it was named for its resemblance to the Map of Tasmania.

The fern wall at Christchurch Airport was supposed to showcase Aotearoa's native plants, but they've dropped the ball with this one. it's a very popular indoor plant originally native to South America, and now grown worldwide. Somewhat invasive in Hawaii and French Polynesia.

I'm so happy that my adiantum somehow came back to life and is currently growing rapidly.

The material is a white/cream colored silk. I used Speedball silver fabric printing ink. And the block was one of her own carving. This was the first time I’ve printed silk and in the future I would not use this kind of ink again. It needs heat setting and I could not get it hot enough for long enough without scorching the fabric. And the water-based Speedball fabric printing ink is more like paint than ink so getting the block loaded nicely was tricky. Over all it turned out pretty well imo. And it filled me with so much joy making it for one of my dearest friends!!!

All packed and loaded for another Egil's. Will hit the road early tomorrow for an event I make it to every year that I can. It was my first SCA event back in 1989. So it is also my persona's birthday! 36 eh? lol

From the Greek a- ‘without, lacking’ and diantos ‘moistened’ because the fronds of this fern are supposed to remain dry after submersion in water, and Allan Cunningham (1791–1839) an English botanist and explorer, primarily known for his travels to New South Wales and New Zealand to collect plants. Author of Florae Insularum Novae Zelandiae Precursor, 1837–40 (Introduction to the flora of New Zealand).

An Aotearoan endemic, common in coastal and lowland forest areas grows on banks and among boulders especially on limestone, marble, basalt or andesite rocks. The rhizome creeps widely once established. Dark green on top of frond and a blue-green underneath.

Native to China and the Himalayas Adiantum venustum (evergreen maidenhair fern, Himalayan maidenhair fern) is a deciduous fern but usually remains evergreen to -10 °C when it will be deciduous. This plant needs a moist environment with soil containing a large amount of humus.
