I think we all already know the Emperor is a cynical, toxic scumbag for using a family framework for the Custodes, Primarchs and Astartes, like it feels very "corporate boss who insists 'we here at Genocide & Chemical Warfare Inc. are a family' while nonchalantly firing Karen in Accounting for getting sick"
Like it's so blatantly manipulative (especially the fact that it seems as if Big E is telling both the Custodes and Primarchs "no no YOU'RE my real sons, I'm just humoring the other guys")
But sometimes it feels so needlessly cruel to specifically set up a father/son dynamic between the Primarchs and Astartes, like he didn't HAVE to do that. I know it's a means of control, but Astartes are literally genetically engineered to be loyal to their Primarchs, you don't have to manipulate them into it. Why could they not just be soldiers who are gene-coded to loyally serve under a general.
Instead you've created a situation where every Primarch--no matter how well intentioned they may be--is a deadbeat dad with way too many fucking kids.
Each Primarch has an actual father/son relationship with maybe 10 Astartes, tops, and then just hundreds of thousands of guys all going "I YEARN FOR FATHER. PERHAPS SOMEDAY FATHER WILL LOOK AT ME. WHAT JOY IT WOULD BRING ME IF FATHER SAID HELLO TO ME. FATHER PLEASE SAY HELLO ONE TIME"
Like fuckin...why? That's insane. That is a bad plan.
