The Bloch-Bauer family had Jewish origins: Adele's father was an entrepreneur and gave his daughter the opportunity to grow up in a cultured environment. A lover of high society and art, Adele was a sort of influencer ahead of her time in Vienna, her city. A friend and great admirer of Gustav Klimt, she soon became his first patron. It was Klimt whom she asked to paint her portrait: the artist studied every detail of the work, producing hundreds of preparatory sketches. Adele Bloch-Bauer's appearance perfectly encapsulated the spirit of the time, sophisticated and sensual in its own way.
