Something that I have subconsciously known for a while, but that only just now fully occurred to me:

The Ace Ops all have versatile semblances that are hugely useful in combat, but also that you can find easy enough workarounds for. In contrast, we have another group of characters from Atlas whose semblances aren’t really for combat, but that would make them very useful as “Ironwood’s personal attack dogs” (as someone once called the Ace Ops). A group basically built for Black Ops, who chose community service instead.

Robyn Hill and her Happy Huntresses.

The Happy Huntresses all have abilities that would be invaluable to the Atlas Military, specifically. It makes the fact that they no-selled that Special Operative commission all the more interesting, and frankly speaks to great strength of character from the Happy Huntresses.

We don't know Joanna's semblance, or much else about her, so I cannot yet give her a full paragraph. Sorry gang.

But look at Fiona Thyme!!! Mass compression, a pocket dimension that easily and comfortably stores multiple armed transports. The industrial military complex would’ve been slavering over the idea of free mass compression and infinite hidden resources. They canonically did!! Fiona's card in Amity Arena literally says that that Atlas collectively wishes she worked in the military or for the SDC, because she'd save them a ton on shipping costs.

(Which, y'know, is an incredibly reductive sentiment — Fiona spends at absolute minimum four years training as a Huntress, and they want to tell her to haul freight instead of doing the highly specialized job she's actually trained for. Jo mylordshesacactus had a post about this during volume 7 if I recall correctly, so I won’t go super in depth, but I did wanna mention it.)

But then again, Fiona is a Faunus. Atlas is extremely racist. Fiona definitely had ample opportunity to see that she would never truly be welcome, let alone respected, even if she joined the military. She just got there a bit sooner than Marrow, or else was more of a cynic than him about her chances of changing things while working inside the system.

But what about May Marigold?

Her semblance is built for military stealth and special ops missions — she can turn not just herself, but entire groups of people invisible. Seemingly the field from her semblance also muffles sound to an extent, so she’s really well-suited to sneaking around and spying on people. And her semblance is by contrast not a ton of help to her as a civilian Huntress, because it's only effective on people in the first place.

(Invisibility is not gonna hide you from the Grimm, at least not completely and not for very long. Grimm sense emotions, and that appears to be their primary method of tracking prey. We see that Ren's ability to mask emotions will save someone from a rampaging Grimm even when the monster is a scant few yards away from it’s target. Logically it follows that whether Grimm can see you doesn’t really matter so long as they can sense you. May’s semblance is no more helpful than hiding behind a wall when it comes to avoiding Grimm.)

And here's the thing: on the surface, May leaving Atlas could be seen as self-interest. Her family rejected her when she came out, she had nothing to stay for, she went to Mantle to spite them. That would mean it’d be even easier for her to have joined/stayed with the military, taken a well-paying job as an Ace Op and been comfortably set for life. But we know that May Marigold did not get to where she is because of any kind of self-interest.

"Mantle needed me. And to the Marigolds, that meant I wasn’t their son anymore. And I made sure everyone knew that I wasn’t their daughter.”

The order of events here is: 1. May decides to follow her conscience and serve the common people whom Atlas has always looked down on and exploited. 2. May officially severs ties with her family, who may have been shitty to her before that point, but hadn’t actually disowned her. 3. May comes out as a trans woman.

May Marigold left Atlas, solely because she was needed in Mantle. That she transitioned is a totally separate subject - May's VA has even said she imagines May didn't figure out that part of her identity until after she escaped Atlas's oppressive social climate.

And Robyn? Robyn Hill?

She is a literal human lie detector. Her belief in a need for truthful, honest communication between everyone, but especially those in power versus those they hold power over, is exactly what makes her a good leader. It’s such a big part of what made her the Hero of Mantle — no doubt she was exposing corruption as much or more as she fought Grimm.

But how easily and eagerly would the Atlas military have used and corrupted that semblance?

Robyn would make a fantastic interrogator. Atlas has always seen Mantle as untrustworthy, or at least undeserving of honesty, let alone kindness. Imagine how many times the principle of “innocent until proven guilty” could be broken if you got someone to hold a prisoner’s hand and question them, calling out even the tiniest lies, until they got frustrated and broke and admitted something, anything.

(Concerning thought which just occurred to me — would a person who got corrupted and exploited their semblance that once reflected their best qualities then have that semblance change drastically? Or can you betray your own values and keep your semblance as-is? Hmm. May use Cinder or Neo or even Emerald as potential case studies for this. But later.)

Robyn’s semblance could so easily be corrupted and used against the common people. Subsequently, James and the military probably tried so fucking hard to recruit her.

And she no-selled it. The Happy Huntresses all did.

Including Joanna, who tragically we still do not know enough about for me to confidently analyze what she gave up and why, but like…she’s not one of Mantle’s heroes for nothing.

Robyn Hill, Joanna Greenleaf, May Marigold and Fiona Thyme could’ve sold their souls for personal profit in Atlas. They chose not to.

No wonder Forrest put so much emphasis on the fact the Happy Huntresses could’ve done what was proper and profitable and easy, and instead spat in Atlas’s collective face to do what was right for Mantle.

Why is RWBY vs Ace Ops one of the best fights in the series?

(Quick note: This is an excerpt from a big post I uploaded previously; if you're interested in what I'm explaining here, I recommend reading it as well.)

What I love about this sequence is the detail, the subtext, and the visual language. Specifically, what fascinates me is how Team RWBY didn't won by being stronger or by luck, but by strategy and teamwork.

- Ruby knew that the Ace Ops were stronger than them, so from the beginning she opted for a Divide & Conquer strategy; she took advantage of Harriet's more emotional and arrogant personality to lure her away from her team, knowing that she was the only one who also had the ability to hold her own in a fight. Even though Harriet is faster, Ruby manages to outmaneuver her by opting for an evasive tactic, both to distract Harriet and to make her overconfident and lose focus, which she takes advantage of by using her own semblance at the right moment to partially immobilize her.

While Harriet opted for a direct and destructive approach to try and finish her off, Ruby remained defensive at all times to make her expend the remaining strength she would have after the Battle of Mantle and buy time until her own teammates won their matches and could come to her aid.

- Following her sister's example, Yang approached Elm, knowing that both were fighters who relied more on strength, supported by Blake, whose maneuverability allowed her to handle Vine's semblance. Initially, both were at a disadvantage facing the two, until Yang took advantage of Elm's emotional personality to upset her and free Blake, and from there the approach changed: Instead of trying to fight a 2v2, they opted for a 2v1.

While Elm and Vine disagreed on their fighting approaches, Blake and Yang took advantage of this to eliminate them separately. They coordinated their efforts, taking advantage of Vine's pacifist approach and Blake's clones to trick and knock him out. This left only Elm, whose strength was unwittingly nullified because while she attempted a direct fight, the girls used this to their advantage, destroying the ground and rendering her semblance useless and then, they coordinated again and launched a combined attack.

- Marrow's Semblance may be incredibly overpowered, but it has a drawback: it only works while he maintains eye contact with him target. This positioned Weiss as the perfect opponent thanks to her use of summons, turning a 1v1 into a 2v1.

First, she buys time using the Freezerburn tactic so she can summon Arma Gigas without Marrow interfering (demonstrating a strategic improvement compared to her fight with Vernal).

When Harriet arrives, instead of taking advantage of the situation and working together against Ruby and Weiss, their disagreements lead them to clash and waste the opportunity. This contrasts with the girls, who, like Blake and Yang, take advantage on the gap between them: Just as Harriet was blinded by anger, Marrow was blinded by her principles.

Even separately, Weiss and Ruby were able to coordinate and support each other in their respective fights at the opportune moment.

This fight represents how much the girls have grown as a team and fighters: They may not have finished the academy like the Ace Ops, but they managed to compensate by going out into the WildWorld and facing all kinds of dangers and adversaries, making them grow not only as individual fighters physically and psychologically, but also strengthening their bond to create a tacit understanding on the field, improving their communication and individual and collective adaptability.

And is in this precisely where they far surpass the Ace Ops, as hinted at in episode 4 of this same volume and later confirmed in V8: The Ace Ops lack a bond that allows them to complement each other without a leader. Clover was more than a captain; he was the glue that kept the team together and functional, as well as their guarantee that they would always have the advantage in any situation. Therefore, the moment he was not longer there for them, they began to fall apart, they let their emotions get the better of them and acted independently, which Team RWBY took full advantage of from the start.

Finally, another interesting detail is how each of the Ops' defeats directly relates to the lessons of the fables on which they are based:

Harriet let her emotions get the better of her and overconfident in her speed, just as the hare let his arrogance get the better of him and ended up losing the race against the turtle.

Elm and Vine couldn't coordinate and instead of supporting each other, they tried to fight separately, just as the Elm thought its own strength was more than enough and ended up splitting because it underestimated the importance of support and flexibility.

Marrow let its emotions guide it more than common sense, just like the dog that impulsively jumped into the river and ended up drowning.

So yes: This fight, besides being magnificently choreographed, is also very well planned and has a very well-achieved narrative significance.

What's your favorite fight in the show?

In RWBY? RWBY vs Ace Ops, no doubt. It's just amazing and it shows how smart team RWBY is and how that gets them the win rather than just going with strength/skill. Like the factors:

The taunting: Harriet and Elm are the clearly the most emotional members of the Ace Ops and very quick to anger, something that Ruby and Yang take into consideration and both of them provoke them with words, which makes the other two act without thinking. “We're the best Huntsmen in Atlas”, “You were, then you trained us” specifically was not only badass but also a genius response from Ruby's part. She then gets to run away and make sure Harriet for sure follows her, driving her away from their teams, which is the smartest move considering she's the only one who could handle Harriet's speed for a while. She then mostly proceeds to stay on the defense rather than straight up fighting her, and lets Harriet tire herself out.

Yang and Blake's team work: The Bees take on the Trees (lmao). At first it doesn't go well, trying to 1v1 and all, but they're both smart enough to see one clear thing: Vine and Elm, rather than working with each other, they keep disagreeing and arguing with each other. So, Blake and Yang decide to do the opposite: work together. 2v1. Take one out first and then the other one. And boy does it work, because the moment Vine is out the other Ace Ops are like "oh, shit" and they realize they're fighting Huntresses, and that they're not playing around. And that sets the tone for the rest of the fight. Then Elm falls hard too lmao.

Weiss VS Marrow: Marrow's semblance is very OP, but it works only on one direction at a time. Which means that the moment they left him against Weiss, the poor guy —who didn't even want to fight and was holding back— was already kind of fucked, because she happened to be the one RWBY member that could fully counteract his semblance with her own. Weiss simply pulled a Freezerburn on her own, creating mist that gave her time to summon (showing how much she'd grown from her fight against Vernal). Then she kept her Arma Gigas and herself and opposite sides. Marrow uses Stay on her? Arma Gigas will attack him. Marrow uses Stay on Arma Gigas? Weiss is free, now she can attack him. She turned the 1v1 into a 2v1, and considering Marrow really didn't wanna fight her or hurt her, it was clear he was going to lose the moment they left him with her.

Weiss and Ruby's team work: Ruby showed up to assist Weiss against Marrow. Instead of choosing to work against them together, Marrow and Harriet argue and disagree with each other, and then Ruby runs and drives Harriet away again in anger. Then, after Weiss has dealt with Marrow, she's the one that shows up to help Ruby again, and kind of takes Harriet out-- well, really, Harriet took herself out, but you know what I mean here. Despite fighting Marrow and Harriet separately (99% on purpose, they were definitely keeping them apart intentionally), Ruby and Weiss were still working together. Harriet and Marrow weren't, because Hare was too blinded by her rage to even consider collaborating with Marrow. Again, the taunting worked.

In any case, genius fight. Team RWBY won not for skills or because they were stronger. They won by using their brains and working together and proved that what they lacked in experience compared to the Ace Ops, they made up for it by being a much better team. That's why it's my fave.
