Picked this up on ebay recently. Bulova Accutron Railroad Approved Quartz. Movement is a 2453.10 which is evidently not sexy enough to have much info on it out there, neither is the 2803.10 which I also have 2 of now which is arguably nicer? 7 jewel movements. Well... after a full service this one is running happily and I'm working on other bits, ordered a replacement crystal, I'm struggling right now with the dial feet that were sheared off before it got to me and someone glued a bunch of this watch back together. /sigh That means a lot of extra work to make it right because as much as I respect MacGyver and all things that you can fix with bubble gum and some duct tape... watches do not fall into that category. Especially a Bulova. Originally my op on quartz was they're all trash, but I've since discovered there are 2 potentially 3 classes of quartz. Trash-disposable-mall watch grade garbage quartz. Friend don't let friends wear or buy this level of quartz unless you just dont care but I wont' be seen with you :P Then there is vintage quartz, and a lot of this stuff from the 70's is pretty serious. This is during the quartz crisis and Swiss makers were trying to cope and figure out how to survive but also, they looked at watch making like "it must be serviceable..." and THESE are the ones I'm worried about, they are serviceable, they are nice, and in spite of not having a typical mechanical power delivery system they are still pretty traditional horology and well designed because they hadn't gotten to the point of "make a bazillion of them, make them cheap and disposable" because that's the stuff we don't care about. Accutron Tuning Fork stuff is mind blowing and I haven't touched that yet. I watched a video and ...I might have to pass. Well see if I ever lay hands on one for cheap enough because most of this stuff is crazy expensive and parts are scarce and well I'd rather stick with stuff I can get cheap that still scratches the itch. In any event, this little watch was a absolute pleasure to service and reassemble. I might have to do a teardown and reassembly post well see. For now, just this, these are awesome little quartz watches, the movements are legit mechanicals that just happen to have little electronic engines. They're Swiss made and it shows. Thought and care went into the design. They're obviously made to be maintained so maintain them I shall. Hope you're having an awesome weekend!
