Yoga is For Everyone (But is it really?)
Om Mani Padme Hum. The jewel is in the lotus. We already hold everything we seek.
We've all seen the slogan: “Yoga is for everyone.”
It’s a beautiful idea - one that suggests that yoga transcends ability, age, race, shape, and background. But is this statement really true in practice? Or has the heart of yoga been lost in translation - commodified, streamlined, and contorted into a narrow vision that doesn't reflect its deeper roots?
In this piece, we explore what it really means to say that yoga is for everyone - and ask what needs to shift for that vision to become reality.

Nurture yourself with my free bed yoga video! 🌱 Head to my bio for the link 😊 🌿 Bed yoga is a great option if you are navigating energy impairment or chronic illness or if you are feeling really comfy in bed and want to enjoy some gentle mindful movement. It all works on the floor too if you’d rather get up, the idea is to move in the way that feels right for you. 🌸 This sequence is designed so you can take rests along the way, or even break it into smaller sections depending on your capacity. 🍃 Nothing needs a specific warm up, and the only props we use are an (optional) strap and a pillow. 🌻 As you move through this sequence you will gently mobilize your hips, shoulders and spine. The gentle twists, flexion and extension movements that we do can also nurture the digestive system. 🌺 Hope you’re all having a cosy long weekend! . . . . #gardenofyoga #accessibleyoga #gentleyoga #freeyoga #onlineyoga #darebinbusiness #bodypositiveyoga #chronicillness #energyimpairment #chronicfatigue #bedyoga #yoganorthcote #melbournelovesyoga #selfcare (at Garden of Yoga) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqwcJcSPCBr/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

'Jo creates the most beginner-accessible classes I've ever found (and I've been to dozens of studios). Her passion for her work bubbles out of her and into the room; making you feel safe, confident and supported - and thats before you even get into the hammock!' Aviva 💗 Thank you for this wonderful google review!! 🌱 It’s extra heartwarming because this is absolutely my goal - helping people feel comfortable and supported in our sessions. There’s lots of scope in aerial yoga to expand your range of possibilities and explore new ways to move, but sometimes that can feel scary or intimidating. And honestly, sometimes that’s when it can stop feeling like yoga. 🌿 We aim to provide a space so you can grow in your own way, where you feel safe (rather than pressured) to try new things - and also to experience all aspects of this practice beyond the physical. 🍃 Aerial yoga is about the inner experience and using the physical postures to work with the mind - rather than performance aerials which usually focuses on creating beautiful movements for an audience to enjoy (although I fully appreciate that creative expression can also be a powerfully healing practice). 🌸 Feeling safe and supported can be a necessary foundation for the inner work as well as trying new physical movements in class, which can flow into expanding your range of possibilities off the mat as well. So I’m super grateful to feedback like this!! 📸 by @erin_lee_photo_karate . . . #gardenofyoga #makingaerialyogamoreaccessible #bodypositiveyoga #accessibleyoga #aerialyogalove #yogalove #darebinbusiness #yoganorthcote #restorativeaerialyoga #beginnersaerialyoga (at Garden of Yoga) https://www.instagram.com/p/CnyApl1vUnk/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Want to learn more about accessible aerial yoga? Check out the video link in my bio! 🌸 Aerial yoga is very adaptable for different bodies and needs. However we rarely see older people, larger people or people with disabilities represented when it’s shared online. 🙃 Often it’s just intimidating looking circus style moves that can actually put people off trying aerial yoga!! 🌼 Usually the focus is on the physical aspects of this practice rather than benefits for mental health and the potential to better understand the philosophical aspects of this practice and ourselves (the aerial hammock has helped my meditation practice so much). It can also be helpful tool for navigating neurodiversity, managing chronic pain and other ‘invisible disabilities’. 🌿 This is something I really want to change, so it was an honor to present at the 2021 Embodied Yoga Summit on exploring the accessible and therapeutic aspects of aerial yoga. 🌱 @ranelovesyoga and I share some of the ways we adapt movements for different needs here at the studio and our own experiences practicing and teaching. 🌺 I also loved learning more from Laura Piquer @arunai_yoga , Kristin Mathiassen @bendablewellness and Renae Stevens @creativebodyflow the founder of Aerial Yoga Therapeutics who are all using the aerial hammock in innovative and healing ways. 🍃 It took me a minute but I finally uploaded the video to YouTube! It’s also viewable from our website, but since it goes for an hour sometimes it’s easier to save to watch later from there 😉 🪷 I hope you enjoy watching, and if you’d like to connect with other teachers doing this work I also started a Making Aerial Yoga More Accessible Facebook group! . . . #gardenofyoga #makingaerialyogamoreaccessible #accessibleaerialyoga #accessibleyoga #yogaforchronicpain #neurodiversity #yogatherapy #aerialyogatherapeutics #bodypositiveyoga #traumainformedyoga (at Garden of Yoga) https://www.instagram.com/p/CmQO-xsv1Az/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
