Bunyip(バニップ/バンニップ）

オーストラリアの先住民の間で伝承される巨大生物。川や湖に棲み人を食い殺すという。ヨーロッパ人の入植以来、目撃談などが広まった。その姿について、目撃証言はバラバラ。顔は犬のようだとも、アヒルのようなクチバシ、あるいは象のような牙を持っているとも言われ、体についても、ひれを生やしているとか、体毛に覆われている等々、さまざま。

一方で、この生物について残された記述を検証すると、その正体は、絶滅したオーストラリア最大の有袋類・ディプロトドンであるという説もある。
