It absolutely blows my mind that people think the way to solve mental illness is by having them locked up in a 2 x 2 x 2 meter cement box all day long and call that 'keeping society safe.' The fact that it took a person, a society of people, to create such a thing is sickening and certainly not coming from a place of love. The same people that preach about "love all" during church but then punish others from the one thing they need the most? It's fucked up and disturbing.

For six years, Seattle activists battled with policymakers who are pushing for a costly new youth jail and court project.
How does Dean Spade get away with calling themself an abolitionist when he makes EXCUSES for Black Democrats who vote to build the very same new youth jail Dr. Spade wants to abolish? Isn't Dean Spade one of the very same faux progressives he criticizes in this article? And if Larry Gossett is so fucking great, why was it so easy to "force" him to support prison-industrial complex? I smell bullhsit here, Dr. Spade.
"They made a Black County Council member with a history of activism, Larry Gossett, into the project’s spokesperson. For the first few years of the fight, some opponents were steered toward meetings with Gossett that were directed toward helping plan the new jail, supposedly in ways that would allay concerns. Over the years, Gossett has faded from the front lines, perhaps because using him as the face of the project stopped being an effective way to stem opposition."
