The warning signs had started days ago, and Jason ignored every last one of them.

The headaches, the restless energy crawling beneath his skin, the way every scent in Gotham suddenly felt sharper than it had any right to. It was inconvenient, nothing more. He'd pushed through broken ribs, stab wounds, concussions, and enough near-death experiences to make Bruce develop another stress wrinkle. A fucking heat wasn't going to dictate his schedule.

There was still work to do.

The warehouse raid had run longer than expected, the gang had been better armed than intelligence suggested, and Jason had spent the better part of three hours chasing survivors across rooftops. By the time he finally climbed through the apartment window, helmet tucked beneath one arm, every muscle ached with exhaustion.

Or maybe not just exhaustion.

The apartment smelled like cedar, worn leather, and the faint ozone scent Roy always seemed to carry back from missions.

Jason froze.

Roy was home.

Of course he was.

Jason hadn't answered half his messages in two days.

He'd brushed off every question with a short Busy. Fine. Later.

Fine.

That word had become almost laughable.

His gloves suddenly felt too tight. His armor felt suffocating. The instinct to turn around and disappear back out the window was almost overwhelming.

Because if Jason could smell Roy this clearly from the entryway...

Then Roy had probably caught his scent hours ago.

"Damn it," Jason muttered under his breath.

Somewhere deeper in the apartment, footsteps stopped and a silence settled over the rooms, heavy and expectant.

Jason didn't need heightened instincts to know Roy had figured it out, which inevitably meant the conversation he'd been avoiding was finally here. He squared his shoulders anyway, forcing every tell back beneath layers of practiced stubbornness as he stepped farther inside.

Secondary gender usually develops within the window of puberty to college.

Sensitivity Periods (Ruts and Heats) for a healthy individual occurs 1-3 times per year. The typical length ranges from 3-5 days but it is possible to be more or less. Severity can range from being mild symptoms to more extreme.

Male alpha: can father a child like a normal male but are particularly virile during ruts (have knots) can impregnate any female or omega

Female alpha: can mother outside of ruts and father inside of them (vagina puffs out like how birds mate)

Male beta: like a normal man. has pheromones but more subtle or calmer. He can’t utilize them like other genders but is resistant to pheromones of others. can impregnate any woman or omega

Female beta: normal woman. has pheromones but more subtle and calm. more sensitive to others’ pheromones than beta male but able to utilize her pheromones somewhat. can become pregnant by any male or alpha

Male omega: normally can father, in heat can become pregnant. has two passages, one waste the other birth canal. it is very rare for them to become pregnant outside of heat as during that time the passageway is closed and the “female” organs are inactive

Female omegas: highly fertile but especially so during heats. can be impregnated by any male or alpha.

secondary genders are usually for life but there have been situations where someone’s secondary changes (unexpected but not completely unheard of). The one who changes usually keeps aspects of their original secondary gender.

For example a male omega who once was an alpha may keep both their physique and knot.

The change in secondary gender typically occurs in long-term committed couples whose primary and secondary genders are non-compatible.

Note: mating bites are not a thing. Mated pairs are resistant to the pheromones of others due to naturally syncing with their partner, much like a normal committed couple aren’t interested in other people aside from their partner. Mated pairs are not just alpha-omega.

Fated pairs are more like extreme mutual pheromone compatibility. It might be extreme attraction between two parties, or a feeling of calmness and security.

For example, a male alpha businessman experiences peace and stress relief from his female beta secretary’s pheromones, while she experiences a sense of security and trust from his pheromones.
