This small button brooch was found not far from the Museum at Barrow Hills, Radley - the site of an early Anglo-Saxon settlement.⁠ ⁠ This settlement, excavated between 1983-85, was comprised of twenty-two timber framed buildings and forty-five sunken-featured buildings, burial sites, pits and debris. Finds from the site date it to the 4th– early 7th centuries, and indicate links to another nearby settlement, located 500 metres away across a marshy stream.⁠ ⁠ These small, copper-allow button brooches are not uncommon in Anglo-Saxon finds, and are typically decorated with an anthropomorphic, or human-style face, making them strikingly characterful. A large number of them even featured prominent moustaches. ⁠ ⁠ Copper-alloy brooch, 2.2 cm. ⁠
