Wilford, staring at the ground in mild dissociation: ...
You/DA/Captain: *Selecting choice "You good buddy?"*
Wilford: Ah! Friend! You remember how time hates me and the laws of the universe are only mere suggestions?
You: *Nod nod*
Wilford: AHHAHAHAHHAHAA- I forgot which one I'm dating
You: ...
Wilford: Because it's between that detective, and Darkiplier, and guessing wrong in any way will lead to CATASROPHY!
You: ...
Wilford: Don't give me that look! If I'm dating neither they'll probably punch me into next Tuesday if I say we're dating, if we are dating and I say we aren't I will also be punched to next Tuesday. Annnd since you're in here with me you'll probably also be punched, so it's your problem too!
You: *Arm waves of befuddlement*
Wilford: Please comrade, it was either two weeks or two years ago I pissed both of them off in quick succession, and HAHA—I'm not taking the risk that it was two years ago.
Wilford: So you go talk to both of them and figure out which timeline and slash or version of them are outside of this room, and also what year I'm in, and also my notebook of what years I dated whom.
You: ...
God, probably: Choice one, "Of course I'll help!" Choice two, "Absolutely not you buffoon!"
God (or Markiplier???): Oh! This is new; and choice three! "What."
In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees
And the voices of those who stand looking.”

Several weeks had passed and Darren had a beautiful memorial service… Being there, it made me realize just how little I really knew about him. I met his father, his many… many sisters, his abuela, old teachers and high school friends… Every single person described a different version of him. It made me wonder which Darren was the real Darren… Did I ever really meet him or did I meet a character? Being here I felt so out of place… everyone has such fond and vivid memories of him but all I remember is busting that door open and finding him there… I can’t even remember when I first met him… it must’ve been…

“Officer García, I’d like to introduce you to our newest detective. Detective Abraham.” Sergeant Roy introduced me to a very attractive man with sun-kissed skin and curly black hair, his deep brown eyes studied me as if sizing up his competition.
“Pleasure to make your acquaintance, Detective.” He extended a hand to me and I took it. His grip was firm but he has very soft hands it was nearly impossible to get a read on him…
“Pleasure’s all mine…” Making eye contact usually came easy to me but for some reason I was looking almost anywhere but his eyes.
“García I’d like you to give the Detective a tour of the place, I’m very very busy today.” Sarge gave him a pat on the back before walking off. Suddenly I was left with this very attractive man and I felt like I had been put under a microscope. As if my every move was being carefully studied and recorded, I had never been so scared to make a poor first impression. Part of me was cursing Mark for finding me this job, was he setting me up for humiliation? In this moment I wished I could crawl into a hole and disappear…
“You can call me Darren.” The officer broke the silence between us.
“Abe.” I nodded.
“Well Abe, why don’t you follow me this way?” Darren turned and began walking. He gave me a very in depth and educational tour of the station. He could write essays detailing the importance of each room and when to use it. He even had information to give about the bathrooms. It was like he was a walking encyclopedia… “And that’s why you need to make sure to thoroughly fill out the paperwork when bringing in evidence… Hey are you paying attention?” Darren snapped in my face.
“Yes, yes… I hear you.” I sigh, a little annoyed but mostly impressed that he has such a detailed explanation for a simple printer. He nods and continues the tour. After what felt like ages he finally had nothing more to show me and I was dismissed… I left the station, Mark was picking me up but he was standing beside of a car that I hadn’t seen before. It was a 1974 Plymouth Satellite…
“Abe!!” Mark called me over, “quick think fast” he tossed me keys.
“You want me to drive your new ride?” I asked, confused.
“No~ silly… It’s your car now. I figured the newest big-shot detective needs his own fancy schmancy car right?” Mark smirked smugly, he knew I hated when he spent lots of money on me.
“You absolutely did not have to do that Mark.” He shushed me by putting a finger to my lips.
“Drive the damn car Abraham.” He walked to the passenger’s side, patting the roof of the car before getting in.
The sleek black car shone brilliantly in the afternoon sunlight. It was free of any dents or dings… This car was fresh off the lot for sure. How much had that stupid Mark spent on this?

The memory is hazy, I can barely recall the day and it hardly feels real. How is it possible that two people who meant so much to me could be…
“You must be Darren’s new guy?” A stranger approached me. He was pale and had bright blue eyes, his dirty blonde hair was about shoulder length and slightly greasy, he wore a very nice black suit. His eyes were a bit red from crying and he was fairly short, maybe 5’5.
“And you are?” I raise an eyebrow, the gall on this guy was unmatched. I wouldn’t dare approach someone like that during a memorial service.
“Pardon my poor manners… I’m Jean Dubois, I was Darren’s first boyfriend.” The man introduced himself properly. “We stayed in touch because he still meant so much to me… But he also talked about you to me…”
“Me?” I was taken aback, sure we had something between us but was I truly that important that he felt like he should talk about me…
“Darren has always had the plan to take his own life before he became bed ridden like his mom… It always hurt to hear him talk about it… But suddenly he started talking about you and for just a second I thought he might actually have found a reason to live…” His voice was shaky and hoarse. “To think there was really no doubt in his mind… Maybe I should’ve done something differently.” His eyes filled with tears
“Hey!” I grabbed Jean by the shoulders. “There is nothing you could have done. This isn’t your fault, you can dwell and dwell and dwell on the what-ifs and the endless amounts of impossible scenarios but it won’t bring him back and it won’t take away your pain. All you can do is carry the flame he left behind for all of us. Darren will live on as long as we carry him in our hearts… Keep your head high… And please… please continue to live, don’t give up… Not now, not ever.” Before I knew it he was hugging me tightly and crying uncontrollably. I awkwardly hug him back…
“Thank you…” He pulls away, sniffling. “I can see why Darren loved you… I’m glad he found you.” Jean smiled sadly before departing to talk to other people at the service.
I was about to leave when I saw him… The Colonel. He had just entered the bathroom, this was my chance to corner him. I stormed in and he was stood in front of a mirror, combing his mustache.
“Colonel.” I clench my fist tightly.
“Uhhhh who are you? Do I know you?” He gawked at me.
“Don’t play dumb Colonel… Or should I say William J Barnum?” I narrow my eyes.
“Now that is a name I have not heard in a while…” He crosses his arms and stares up as if reminiscing.
“Quit stalling! You are a murderer and it’s time to face the music.” I step towards him and instead of stepping back he walks towards me. He grabs the collar of my suit jacket and pulls me in, our faces are inches apart and I feel his warm breath on my skin… he reeks of alcohol.
“You must be the detective from so long ago…” He studies my facial features this tone is a stark contrast from his drunken slurring moments prior. “I really thought you were dead… Just another statistical inevitability I presume…” He finally lets go, turning to walk back to the mirror.
“The fuck are you on about?!” I spat angrily.
“Well when thinking in infinites, ‘unlikely’ is just certainty waiting for its turn.” He continues combing his mustache. “I suppose that’s why I’ve found myself here of all places..”
“What the hell are you saying?” This man must be on something because he isn’t making sense at all.
“When a caterpillar emerges from its cocoon it realizes it has experienced a… uhh… metamorphosis!! It becomes a beautiful butterfly.. And isn’t that just wonderful? The nature of life and love it simply is beautiful.” He rambles on and on… “Or this one time I got really drunk— the kind that leaves your head spinning as bright lights dance around… Anyway- all that to say that nothing matters…”
“I’m tired of your weird ass allegories!!! You’re under arrest for the murder of Mark, Damien, Celine, and the DA” I step towards him again.
“oh all right all right fine, I must use the bathroom first.” He enters a stall and shuts the door.
“Hey!!” I try to follow but the door is already locked so I peer over the door to see… “What the fuck?!” He just… vanished.

Once I got into my car I angrily hit my steering wheel over and over until my hands stung from the impact. I had him! I almost had him… He was right there and I fucked up… He got away yet again. Not only that but because of him another innocent life was lost… I drove in silence all the way home.
The day after the service the station was very solemn. Darren had left his mark on every single person there… It would never be the same without him. I sat at my desk quietly finishing paperwork.
“Hey? How you holding up?” Sarge came over to check on me. I just nodded and my lack of response said it all. “Yeah… It’s got everyone pretty shaken up.. I think it will be hard to adjust to this new normal.” Before he could continue I interjected.
“Normal?! Nothing about this is normal.” I slam my fist down onto the desk. “I was shot by a crazy lunatic after my friends were murdered and now Darr- Officer García is gone too?! The worst part about it all is I can’t do anything…” I felt hot tears forming in my eyes but I blinked them away. I couldn’t cry, not here, not now.
“Heh… Yeah I suppose you’re right… It’s been a pretty shitty couple of months huh?” He chuckled, not because it was funny but because he, too, felt powerless. “I’ve been a Sargent for ten years now Abraham… And never in my ten years have I lost one of my own…” He shook his head
“Sarge…” I turned to see tears streaming down his face.
“And we nearly lost you too which is exactly why I’ve had you on paperwork duty for so long… I can’t risk losing my greatest detective.” He suddenly looked very determined…
“But I could do so much more! I can catch the man who nearly killed me.” I began
“No absolutely not. It is a conflict of interest. You won’t be going in without bias and therefore I cannot have your feelings compromising the investigation.” I opened my mouth to argue “But! I will allow you to return to active duty. You are not to go anywhere near that case. Am I clear?” He narrowed his eyes seriously.
“Crystal.” To say I was disappointed is an understatement.
“Good. I’m glad to have you back Abe.” He smiled slightly before walking away to check on the others. I was left with a deeper sense of determination, I was going to catch that colonel… Even if it killed me…
After a long day of paperwork I left the station for my car to see a familiar face awaiting me… Kelsey.
“Long time no see?” She smiled brightly.
“What are you doing here?” I asked harshly.
“Oh… Well I figured you would want some information on Willia-“ I threw my hand over her mouth swiftly.
“Shhh shhh shut up! I’m not supposed to be looking into this case.” I whispered angrily. “Get in the car, we’ll talk more away from here.” I walk to the driver’s side and get in.
“So-“ I shoot her a look that tells her ‘not yet.’ And I pull out of the parking space, scanning the lot to make sure nobody saw the suspicious sight. I sped out of the parking lot and began driving away from the station. Finally I looked to her, prompting her to continue. “So… I donned yet another pseudonym and ended up getting close to his newest persona William James Burgess. We bonded over a shared interest in disco… Not because I actually like disco, I just figured he liked it since he tends to frequent night clubs and-“ She began to ramble.
“Kelsey. Get to the point.” I interrupt.
“Right… Sorry.” She sighs. “Anywhozzle… I got close to him and he told me of his plans to change his name and move to another country. Supposedly he’s going to Ghana?” She finished.
“Ghana? Where in Ghana…?” I tried wracking my brain as to what significance Ghana had to the colonel or Mark but nothing came to mind…
“Something about it being safer?” She shrugged. “He’s leaving next week. I needed to find you so you could plan your next course of action. Are you going after him?” Kelsey seemed genuinely concerned for me… It was nice to have an ally in my corner.
“Yeah… Yeah. I’m going after the bastard all right.” I nodded. I knew that by choosing this route I was going down a path I could no longer return from. But I was willing to take any risk to catch him. I would chase him to the ends of the earth and then some.
