A Gashlycrumb Halloween

This Halloween we present a few pages from one of American writer and artist Edward Gorey's (1925-2000) most well-known books, The Gashlycrumb Tinies, published in New York by Peter Weed Books in 1962.

For those unfamiliar with the work, The Gastlycrumb Tinies is an alphabet book that details the untimely end of 26 children after an outing in thirteen rhyming dactylic couplets, accompanied by Gorey's distinctive pen and ink drawings. While among our favorites are "N is for Neville who died of ennui" and "S is for Susan who perished of fits," we selected what we think are the most ghastly, gruesome, and horrific pages for your Halloween pleasure.

My favorite Christmas presents :-D My parents got me the Tolkien calendar, new edition of Tolkien's letters, and the abecedarium, and the bracelet was from my uncle who hosted Christmas this year.

The abecedarium is so cool!

This is my all-time favorite artist book. I love alliterations, animals, anthropomorphism, and having to look words up in the dictionary, because who uses “zaftig” in casual conversation? 

This book features beautifully done copperplates of animals doing human things, from Acrimonious Alligator Acrobats to a Zaftig Zebra Zooming Zealously from Zoo. I can’t decide whether my favorite page is the Jaunty Jaguars out for a friendly morning joust before they’ve even had their coffee, the Hippopotamus who’s just dying to serve you their latest blend of tea, or the colophon itself, impressively rendered in alphabetical order and still making (some) sense.
