a/n: Hey y'all this is my first time publishing my writing here so be sure to leave some feedback. This is being written at midnight because my body decided to be mean, so I'm sure I'll need it. This is for @omgrachwrites' 1k follower celebration, congratulations girlie!
You dug through Steve's dresser, trying not to make too much noise, though there was no reason to worry. You were the only one left in the tower; everyone else had gone on a mission and weren't expected back until the next evening. Your leg had been burned badly in an explosion during the last mission, keeping you benched.
It had taken you three hours to convince Steve that you would be fine on your own. The man was a mother hen. Eventually, with some gentle threatening from Natasha, he had agreed.
You now regretted encouraging him to go. Nightmares filled your sleep, waking you up drenched in a cold sweat. You missed Steve; he was a teddy bear and security blanket wrapped in one.
This led you to your current mission, stealing one of Steve's ridiculously comfortable shirts. Tight on Steve, they dwarfed you, making them perfect for sleeping in.
Finally, you found the shirt you were looking for. It was one of Steve's favorites, the one you had custom-made for him. The shirt was navy blue and read, "Just a kid from Brooklyn". Steve had grinned when he read it and now wore it constantly around the compound.
Smiling fondly at the memory, you slipped off your pajamas and replaced it with the shirt. You felt the tension in your body drip away as you realized it still smelled like him too. Contently, you crawled into the bed and fell asleep.
7 hours later, Steve hummed happily as he made his way to his room after the debriefing. The mission had taken much less time than anticipated, allowing him to spend the day with you. He reached his room and opened the door softly, expecting you to still be sleeping.
There you were, lying sprawled across the bed, hair a mess and mouth open. Steve quickly removed his clothing and got into bed, pulling you into him gently. You woke up immediately and promptly rolled over and kissed his cheek happily.
"You're back early," you remarked.
"Yeah intel overestimated the amount of agents they'd have and..." he answered before pausing and taking a look at you, "Is that my shirt?"
"You mean our shirt?"
"Oh now it's shared?" he asked, a smile on his lips.
"Yep, I'll draw up a custody agreement in the morning. Now, we're going to sleep."

okay jumping on the buddieravi trapped under rubble together bandwagon. consider this, thereâs no big love confession, but eddie hasnât moved back to la yet, the earthquake happens not long after the funeral and hes still there and its an all hands on deck sort of situation, and thus buddieravi ends up trapped, theyâre sitting there under the rubble and eddie confesses âif we survive this, chris and I are moving homeâ and buck whips his head around to stare at Eddie with wide eyes and itâs quite for a moment, and ravi to break the awkwardness and also mistaking buckâs bewilderment as panic says âwell, buck if you need a place to stay Ihave a pretty decent guest roomâ and before buck can even turn to look at ravi eddieâs like âdonât be ridiculous, iâm not kicking buck out, we can shareâ and buck, still staring bewildered at eddie goes âha ha yeah of courseâ and ravi decides to just drop it because heâs so tired of being stuck in Their Bullshit.
(unfortunately for ravi, this is Not the last of this particular bullshit)
cut to the night of eddie and chris moving home, they spent most of the afternoon into the evening unpacking the uhaul, chris has gone to bed and buck and eddie are sitting on the couch together sharing a beer, both utterly exhausted but neither wanting to break from their peaceful little bubble, until eddie yawns big and loud and buck goes âyou should take the bed tonightâyouâve been driving all day and your back doesnât need to be more fucked up than it already isâ and eddie looks at him like hes grown two heads and goes âdonât be silly, weâll share the bed. itâs not like we havenât done it beforeâ and buck obviously canât say âwell that was before i realized i was bisexual. and also maybe am in love with youâ so instead he goes âhaha, yeah, of courseâ and when they get in bed buck ends up lying so stiff that eddie rolls his eyes (which buck doesnât see because heâs pointedly staring at the ceiling) and goes âbuck, hey, relax. itâs just meâitâs not like i donât know about how you snore like a grandpaâ which does get buck to relax a little because he turns to glare at eddie insisting âi donât snore like a grandpaâ and eddie gives him a toothy smile, reaches out to pat him on the cheek (which buck totally doesnât tense up again because of) and says âsure bud, just get some sleep, iâm not gonna kick you out of bed in the middle of the nightâ and then rolls over and goes to sleep. the next night when they are once again sitting on the couch together nursing beers, eddie stands up, smacking his thighs and declares that itâs time for bed and before buck can even suggest any kind of sleeping arrangement eddie holds out his hand for buck to use to haul himself off the couch with a âcâmon budâ and eddie, instead of letting go once buckâs on his feet, turns and tugs buck along with him to the bedroom, leaving no room for buck to protest as he declares heâs taking the bathroom first and buck can just get changed in the bedroom while he waits.
cue a montage of the next couple of nights where buck, trying to be normal about it, ends up getting some of the worst sleep of his life because he forces himself to stay awake as long as possible to make sure eddieâs actually fallen asleep and then subsequently makes sure he wakes up in the morning before eddie, nights spent at the firehouse are actually a reprieve for him, at least the ones where they can actually lie down in the bunk room for a little while. which works for a little while until they end up having a particularly grueling shift with back to back calls allowing for little to no rest, buck finds ravi after their shift is done while eddie is still in the showers washing off sewer (he drew the short straw) and asks if he could crash in his guest room that night. ravi raises his eyebrows and responds with a teasing smirk âwhat did eddie finally kick you out?â and buck, slightly offended on eddies behalf replies âno of course notâ to which raviâs eyebrows manage to raise slightly higher and buck, slightly panicking blurts âeddie and chris are having a father-son bonding night and i donât want to intrudeâ and ravi just kinda stares at him for a moment and buck hastily adds on âiâll make dinner?â and ravi, not one to argue with the offer of free food shrugs and says âsureâ and they agree that buck will come by around 6 and its set.
except eddie and chris donât have any kind of father-son bonding night planned, and buck has to come up with an excuse for why heâs heading out for the evening and, again panicking slightly, tells eddie that he had a date. to which eddie raises his eyebrows and goes âyouâre dating again?â and buck, already set in the lie, responds âjust, uh, just casually. iâm notânot looking for anything serious right now, just trying to, yâknow, get back on that horse?â and eddie is quiet for a moment just looking at buck and then says âright, sure.â and buck turns to leave but pauses again, âuh, donât wait up? i donât know how late iâll beâ and eddie, voice going slightly funny replies âright, uh, i guessâhave fun?â and buck nods, pleased with himself for his on the spot improvisational skills, and heads out the front door.
the night spent at raviâs rejuvenates buck and he is able to fall back into the routine he crafted for himself to be able to share the bed with eddie for about another week until the lack of sleep catches up with him again and he finds himself reaching out to ravi again, this time claiming âchris is having a sleepover and itâd be kinda hard to crash on the couch when theres a whole bunch of teenagers camped out in the living room determined to stay awake as long as possibleâ and offers to bring ravi some of his latest batch of baked goods and ravi once again is like. sure man. because who turns down buckâs blueberry surprise muffins? and anyway everything is once again set. except for the fact that there isnât any actual sleepover happening at the diaz house that night, so buck once again makes up a date, and once again tells eddie ânot to wait upâ and eddie doesnât ask how the date went the next morning when he wakes up to buck making breakfast.
and it continues on like that for a few weeks, buck making up some kind of reason he needs to be out of the diaz house for a night to ravi and then telling eddie heâs got another date and not to wait up and buck foolishly thinks heâs hacked the system.
until the fifth time it happens, buck comes home from raviâs place to find eddie already awake, sitting on the couch, waiting for him. eddie doesnât meet buckâs eyes when he says âthis is your fifth date this monthâ and buck, confused replies âuh, yeah, guess soâ âsame person? seems like it could be getting a little bit seriousâ and buck rubs at the back of his neck âoh, no, uh, differentâdifferent peopleâ and eddie, still not looking at buck goes âreally? i meanâyou havenât felt a spark with any of them?â and buck chuckles nervously, entirely unprepared for this conversation and replies âuh, no, guess notâ and eddie finally, finally looks at buck and goes âwhy are you lying to me?â he holds up his own phone like a piece of evidence âwe have location sharing on, remember? i know youâve been going to raviâsâ and buck, deer in the headlights, completely panics and blurts out âiâm sleeping with himâ and eddie, looking suddenly very confused, eyes squinting slightly says âwhat?â and buck, already climbing into the hole heâs dug for himself goes, âweâre having sex. me and ravi' and eddie is once again staring at him like he's grown a second head and buck decides to make a stealthy retreat (read: goes to the kitchen and makes a bit of an extravagant breakfast) and then chris is awake and the conversation doesnât get brought back up.
except, they have a shift that same day, and while buck initially is grateful for this, about 4 hours into their 24, ravi comes up to buck while heâs doing inventory in the supply closet and goes âhey, uh, didâdid i do something to make eddie mad at me? because i feel like heâs mad at me.â and buck replies âwhat? no. eddie isnât mad at youâ and ravi goes âare you sure? because heâs been actingâŠa little weird? but like, specifically to me?â and buck is like âpshh, what? no he isnt. hes just beingâregular eddie.â and then in comedic timing eddie appears, does a slight double take at buck and ravi standing together in the supply closet, makes a weird face âsorry, didnât mean to, uh, interrupt anything.â and he says it like the words are sour in his mouth, still looking between buck and ravi, and then he seemingly remembers why he came looking for them in the first place and says âfoodâs readyâ and then promptly spins on his heel and leaves before buck or ravi can say anything.
and ravi just, fixes buck with a Look and buck goes all sheepish and says âuh, so maybe eddieâs acting a little weird.â
Summary: Your husband, Bobby Kennedy, is on the campaign trail. Heâs used to dealing with hecklers, but what happens when one of them brings up you, his young bride?
Bobby was busy campaigning in Nowhere, Midwest for the presidency in yet another primary, practically getting on his knees and begging for votes from people who were suspicious of him at best and downright hostile at worst. It hadnât been fun, to say the least. It was hard on his body and his heart, depending on how the day went. Here, the reception hadnât been great. The party bosses were against him; they were all in on Humphrey. Heâd run into a few pockets of supporters, but that was it. The rest needed convincing. On the way to a campaign stop yesterday, his motorcade had been pelted with eggs of all things! Luckily, there was no shortage of crisp white shirts for him to change into, but the yolks stuck to him like gloopy yellow glue. It was disgusting. He could feel his face heating up in anger just thinking about it.
The worst part, however, was the fact you hadnât been able to join him on the campaign trail. All of his advisors, and even some of the more favorable reporters, told him it was best for his presidential prospects if you stayed back home. He didnât care, of course. You were his wife now and everyone shouldâve gotten over your relationship a long time ago. Admittedly, sleeping with his secretary wasnât the most morally pure thing heâd ever done, but it wasnât anyoneâs business but Godâs and the Popeâs.
The age gap was still too much for a lot of stuck up, straight-laced people to handle. A poll had even recently come out saying it was âunseemlyâ for a man of his age to be with such a young woman. Why someone would take the time to poll people about that, or why people would bother to answer, was beyond him. What a waste of time. Youâd been mortified, though, and wouldnât acquiesce to his insistence you join him. You remained home, curled up in one of his dress shirts, simultaneously entertaining and worrying yourself by watching news coverage of the campaign. Without you there, he wasnât campaigning at full force, and everyone knew it. There was surely to be a write up of his poor performance in the papers soon. A part of him was gone and he couldnât hide it. He didnât want to.
In his darkest moments, though, he thought maybe everyone was right. It was for the best that you didnât see him in front of this kind of crowd. From a podium, he stared out into the sea of faces that hated him the most: college kids. These young people werenât his base, they were McCarthyâs. He was more comfortable speaking to a group of young Native Americans or rural farmworkers than people who were like him, and these kids were the spitting image of a younger Bobby Kennedy, back in Harvard all those years ago. The arrogance and distaste seeped off of them. They especially didnât like when he talked about his desire to end student deferments, so he naturally mentioned that right away. It was a good way to set the mood.
He rattled off points from a prepared speech, glancing down at it every now and then and cutting out full paragraphs, depending on what he really wanted to talk about. At the apogee of his speech, a man- boy, really- in a black turtleneck and horn-rimmed glasses raised up a white sign. Probably another one telling me to get a haircut, Bobby thought. He ran his hand through the floppy mop of brown hair in his face. But he wasnât one to let a heckler or an unsavory sign go unchallenged, especially here. That had been one of the best parts of the campaign, challenging the preconceived notions of people who had already decided he wasnât worth their time. Still speaking, his eyes set in on the sign.
In bold, black letters, the boy had written âGo back home to your slut in New York!â
Bobby stopped in his tracks. âGo back home to your slut in New York,â he slowly read off. He could barely get the words out. He ground his teeth so hard and he was so tense it was like he was choking the words out rather than speaking them. Most of the crowd, previously disinterested, raised their heads at his language. Bobby pointed at the boy. âThe sign says go back home to your slut in New York,â he repeated. The more he said it, the closer a vein was to bursting out of his forehead. He cleared his throat, spread his hands out on the podium, and took a deep breath. It was best not to show a crowd you were unnerved by them, but this time, he couldnât help it.
âThatâs no way to talk about a woman!â A female voice in the crowd spoke up. Bobbyâs eyes widened. A wave of murmurs crashed in agreement. The entire crowd was looking around simultaneously, searching for the sign. It wasnât hard to spot. The boy might have been raising it even higher now that heâd been called out. Bobby wanted to punch the smug look right off of his face.
âPut that thing down!â Another woman said.
Someone else chimed in, âGet it from him!â
Bobby stood up straighter. He was still inwardly seething, but he couldnât help it: he smiled. Maybe thatâs what it took to win people to his side. âDonât worry about it, he mustâve been at the wedding,â he joked. The crowd guffawked louder than they needed to. Maybe it was a little out of awkwardness or relief they werenât all about to get lashings for one kidâs ugly words, but it calmed the mood. Bobby scanned their laughing faces for the boy, but he was harder to spot this time. Heâd put his sign down. A bright red face stared back at him.
Smirking, Bobby looked away and raised his hand to silence the crowd. They followed. âI donât have to do this,â his voice remained light, but he frowned again. âI could go back home to my wife,â he stressed the relationship instead of the unfair epithet youâd been given, âand Lord knowâs sheâd be happy about it. I enjoy being a senator, but I think my favorite job is being a husband.â The students awwed, but he talked over them. âInstead, Iâm hereâŠâ He paused for a moment to build suspense. âIâm here because I want to be your next president.â
The crowd went wild.
When he eventually sauntered away from the podium after resuming his speech, it was to the cheers of âSock it to âem, Bobby!â and not the boos that had originally greeted him. He was grinning from ear to ear, white teeth catching the light of the sun. âCall my wife,â he said to the person nearest to him, love-sickness infecting every word. âGet her on a plane. Weâre going to win this thing.â

I know you probably didnât expect a goodbye letter from me. Or maybe you did, I donât know. Youâre my friend, so I'm writing one.
I know Iâve been closed off lately. I think you understand, though, probably better than anyone else. Because you do it too. I donât know if itâs because youâre scared, like me, or if you really are just an asshole. I think it might be both.
Sorry. I donât want my last words to you to be that you're an asshole. (Even if you are.) The entire point of these letters is to get things off my chest before I die, so I guess Iâll tell you things Iâve never told you.
I wanted to be your friend so badly when I moved here. I wanted to be included in the party, but I also just wanted your approval, because you didnât want me to be in the group, and that felt like a rejection. Iâm not good at those. I felt like I needed to convince you I was worth having around.
I get it now though. It wasnât about me. You had your own shit going on. I really, really get it now. In case this is something you even need to hear, I forgive you. And Iâm sorry we fought sometimes. If I wasnât about to die, I wouldnât say this, but it wasnât all your fault. You were worried about El, and I get that.
You care about people. Really care. It seems like maybe youâre starting to think thatâs a bad thing. Itâs not. I started to think it was, and thatâs what got me into this mess in the first place. So, at the risk of sounding like the biggest hypocrite in the world, Iâm asking you to stop pushing Lucas away. Heâs gonna need you when Iâm gone.Â
And El, I need you to be there for her. You're her person. Even if you break up again, and even if you can't fix it this time, you still have to be there. I know you will, but I had to say it anyway.
Thanks for letting me be your Zoomer. It was fun while it lasted, right?Â
Fernando makes it into Q1. Lance doesnât, Charles finishing less than a second faster than him. He drives back to the garage, tugs off his helmet and chats with Henry. David is in his basket in the corner but he wakes the moment he smells Lance, skidding over on unsteady paws.
Lance leans down and rubs Davidâs head.
His ears perk up as Fernando revs up his car. Lance can barely hold back a giggle at the sight. âSleeping through me and paying attention to Nando, I see whoâs your favorite, boy.â
He strokes Davidâs back, feeling the golem getting tense at his words. âItâs okay,â he whispers, bending down even as his eyes donât leave the screen. âHeâs my favorite too.â
Lance tries not to examine too closely how he feels about Fernando, the depth of it. The way itâs far past lust, leaning into love. Nothing close to friendship, that ship sailing back in 2023.
Lost in thought, Lance tunes out the noises around him, sips on his water. Suddenly thereâs a loud curse from Fernandoâs side of the garage, a bark and David is tearing out onto the pitline.
