She answers, "My dad? It's just my brother. I don't have a dad."

"Oh?"

"Yeah, or a mom."

"Well, where are they?"

She gets uncomfortable, Mike rarely talks about these things. Their parents, their history — that was the stuff that remained buried. Always unspoken, never explained. Abby knew her dad left and her mom got sick and passed away when she was too little to remember. She always wanted to ask more but ... Mike would never give her any closure.

"Uh, I don't know where my dad is. My mom passed away."

"Oh. I'm sorry."

"It's okay." She says, "I didn't really know her anyway. I don't feel sad about it."

"Isn't that weird? I couldn't imagine losing my mom and not feeling anything."

Her brow twitches, "Well, you know your mom. Mine died when I was little."

"What about your dad?"

"I ... I don't know much about him either." She says. "I don't know them at all."

"Why don't you ask your brother?"
