You don't like the way he looks at you. He's going for something like sympathetic understanding, you think, a honeyed reassurance he knows what you've gone through, he gets it--

He knows nothing.

He wasn't there.

He didn't see you choking on your own agony, trembling hands pressed tight to your chest and trying not to think about the exposed bone you can feel beneath your fingertips. He didn't see you finally lose the strength to hold yourself up, vision blurred, clothes and skin soaked in blood as the pool around you only grew wider. He didn't see you fighting to hold onto consciousness even if it meant enduring the unbearable, terrified that if you let yourself rest, you'd never wake back up.

He didn't see the aftermath. He didn't see the tears, the mental anguish, the desperate need to know why you weren't considered important enough for the police to help. He didn't see you take to the skies, finding a lonely cliff edge to stand and shout away your pain, your frustration, your fury.

Why aren't you here? Why won't you help us?!

Our civilians are scared, our Rangers are overwhelmed trying to assess the damage the wild Dynamaxing caused, our Gym Leaders- my friends -are swamped with people needing advice or comfort or reassurances of safety. Why aren't you here?!

Galar needs you! We- I need you!

He didn't see you fall to your knees and scream until your throat was raw and bloody, cursing every officer and their inaction.

We could have died! My brother, his friend- Those children could have died!

He didn't see you break down into frenzied sobbing as Char's wings encircled you, wrapping you in their warm, leathery cocoon. He didn't see you cry cradled in your ace's arms, continuing until this fit had devolved into shaky, uneven exhales that tasted faintly of metal.

So, no. While you don't doubt that he believes he understands, believes that he can claim to know what you faced with any degree of accuracy, you're not buying it for a second.

He has no idea what you went through.

He couldn’t. Not effectively or without a lot of explanation. He raises his good hand and spells.

And half of it was true. He’d tongued the projectile and slipped it into his pocket.

One of his grunts slides over their phone to show the market value of the Iono card.

He was pacing. Had been doing so since he'd first gotten the text responses, walking neat lines from one end of Zero Lab to the other.

Aldrés usually kept himself in sleep mode when alone in the lab, his body unmoving while he hopped from monitor to monitor, keeping everything powered and working as intended. What point was there, of pretending to be human while no audience was available to watch? Its abilities functioned identically regardless of if it was controlling a physical form or not, and continuing the masquerade simply for the sake of doing so felt... oddly lonely. Too much of a reminder of what once had been.

But this time was different. He knew he had to break the news - to attempt deception now would be an insult to them both and the height of cowardice - but how would it be best done? Surely being presented with a lifeless shell would cause more panic than necessary. But was it better to grapple with the sudden news while looking at a dead man's mirror image? Would that not cause distress, too?

Too many variables, every one of them unpredictable.

The call was answered immediately. Aldrés hoped any robotic notes in his voice would be brushed off as line interference, a strange by-produce of the waves of Tera Energy this crater was drowning in.

                     ❝ Greetings. I see you have made it to Zero Gate. I do apologise I wasn't there to meet you, but there are certain... difficulties that require my attention down here. ❞

That's one way to put it, he supposed. There certainly were many problems in need of his constant, undivided attention.

                     ❝ Due to an unprecedented influx in unauthorised personnel attempting to access the crater- ❞ and an alarming number of Paradoxes trying to get out of it ❝ -Zero Gate has been put on lockdown. From my position, I should be able to temporarily re-channel sufficient power back into it, allowing you to enter. ❞

There was a pause, and Aldrés' voice softened. Relief replaced his usual cool detachment, the next words warmer than anything most would expect to hear from the Professor.
