I think the current zeitgeist vis a vis "liminal" spaces and the backrooms and "kidcore" horror et al is really just an expression of discomfort towards the aesthetics of things and places that are dated, ie the window of ugliness that exists between "contemporary" and "vintage" which is a natural revulsion that all generations experience... except the younger gen-zers and gen-alphas (much like boomers) struggle to distinguish between the feelings of discomfort and fear.
