Man United match canceled after training device causes bomb scare
A suspicious package which prompted the evacuation of Manchester United's stadium on Sunday has been identified as a training device, police said. The device, initially described as "incredibly lifelike," was dismantled by authorities after it forced the club's Premier League match against Bournemouth to be abandoned. The incident reflects increased security at Premier League stadiums after last year's Paris attacks. It also followed the British government's announcement Wednesday that it was raising the nation's threat level due to intelligence indicating the possibility of attacks in Britain by factions of the outlawed Irish Republican Army.
It is always the last resort to abandon one of our fixtures and while we apologize for the inconvenience caused to fans, we are sure, in the circumstances, they will appreciate the need to do so.
Premier League statement
It was the first Premier League match to be postponed because of a bomb threat and no group claimed immediate responsibility for causing the disruption. The match was one of 10 taking place on the final day of the Premier League season. United was vying with Manchester City to finish in fourth place in the Premier League and qualify for the Champions League. City drew 1-1 at Swansea, effectively ending United's top-four chances. The League said it would reschedule the Manchester United-Bournemouth match as quickly as possible.
