After the hug...

Returning to the Arc-Cotta house. Ruby slumped down on her bed.

Ruby: I can't believe I just hug Jaune in public like that. What if everyone think that He and I are dating... Ahh!!!!! *mufled scream*

Ruby: No-no. I mean hugging between friend is not unusual, right? Right?

Ruby: Oh who am I kidding I bet everyone is going to teass me especially Nora and Yang. They going to say; "oh look Ruby is dating Vomit Boy." Or something along that line. Ah. Why do I have to hug that blonde dork!

Ruby: But then again, we kinda needed a hug after everything that just happened. And being hugged by Jaune isn't all that bad. Being held by his strong arms, his large chest and feeling the warmth from his body. Ohhhh....

Ruby's body then starts to heat up remembering what happened earlier with the two of them. And soon she finds her hand starts reaching to a place that's even to her she was not supposed to touch.

*moan*

Jaune...

Meanwhile outside the room.

Jaune: *knock, knock* Ruby are you in there?

Ruby: !!!! Eeek. I mean yes I'm in here...

Jaune: I just want to tell you that dinner is served. My sister made her special meatloaf.

Ruby: Y-yeah o-okay I'll be *moan* j-just give a-a few m-minutes.

Jaune: Ruby are you okay? You sounds weird. Can I come in to check up on you?

Ruby: N-no d-don't I'm o-okay just *moan* don't come in...

Jaune: You sure, you don't sound okay?

Ruby: I-I'm sure... Jaune, can I ask you to do something for me?

Jaune: Sure. You can ask me anything.

Ruby: C-can you call me a good *moan* a good girl?

Jaune: Uh, okay. You're a good girl, Ruby.

Ruby: *moan* tell me how much of good girl I am...

Ruby: *!!! * Ahh!....

Jaune: Ruby, are you okay?! Hold on I'm coming in.

*opens door*

Ruby: H-hey Jaune... You don't have to come in. I'm coming down with you.

Jaune: Ruby why are your breathing so shallow and why are you sweating like a waterfall. Are you okay? If you're sick I can show you to a good doctor around Argus. *touch her forehead*

Jaune: Why are you screaming!?

Ruby: *punch Jaune in the gut and run away*

Jaune: *groan* W-wait Ruby what just happened.... *faint*

At Night:

Ruby: (Oh no why did I have to hurt Jaune like that and worse why did I run away afterward instead of explaining myself to him. Oh well I better apologize to him tomorrow. At least I got it out of off my system.

Ruby: Zzzzzz..... !

Expect the unexpected; quite a simple rule taught in many professions but yet hard to grasp all the same. Jaune consider himself a thinker, and more importantly, a problem solver for those in need. He was currently putting that into practice by sitting on the couch of his humble apartment. He’d normally be asleep by now, however that wasn’t an option until…

knock knock knock

Bingo! Jaune stood up to open the door. On the other side was his very close friend and ex girlfriend, Ruby. The Reaper held a duffel bag and had her clothes hastily put on, leaving a few belts unbuckled. She walked inside so he could close the door. Ruby dropped her back near the couch and immediately turned around with her hands together.

Ruby:Thank you thank you thank you thank you!

Jaune:Hehe, it’s no problem. You’d do the same.

Ruby:Maybe if I was awake at this hour! I still can’t believe the pipes bursts throughout my building at a time like this.

Jaune:Expect the unexpected, as Ozpin always says. Did your room flood badly?

Ruby:When I left it wasn’t the worst but I’m not surprised if I come back to a few things ruined. Manage to grab a few important things though. A few clothes, hygiene supplies, Crescent Rose.

Jaune:I’m a little surprised you didn’t call Yang before me.

Ruby:She has Blake over….

Jaune:I’m sure she would’ve made room for you.

Ruby:Oh she would, but not only is she further away, but her and Blake aren’t exactly…quiet.

Jaune:Ah…well I don’t think they would’ve with you aro-

Ruby:I’ve been with them before. They thought I was asleep.

Jaune:I’m so sorry. Too bad Weiss is out of town.

Ruby:Even if she wasn’t I have a sneaking suspicion she’d be in bed hours ago. I know she’d let me in but waking Weiss is a dangerous experience. So yeah, thanks again. *bows slightly* I’ll be out of your hair in two days.

Jaune:Y’know you’re allowed over whenever? It really isn’t a big deal. I…I’ve never changed the locks.

Ruby:Oh..I assumed you did. Guess I destroyed that key for nothing.

Jaune:You could’ve given it back.

Ruby:Mmmm nah. *smiles*

Jaune playfully rolls his eyes and begins walking over to the couch and goes to lay down.

Ruby:Ummm, what are you doing?

Jaune:Going to sleep?

Ruby:Jaune I brought a pillow and cover. I’m not robbing you of your bed.

Jaune:It’s fine. The couch is comfy.

Ruby:Then let me have it! You already took me in. That’s enough.

Jaune:*stands* Ruby, I already changed the sheets. The bed is all yours.

Ruby:*raises brow*…..

Jaune:….*red* Out of etiquette! That’s what you’re supposed to do.

Ruby:Hey, I don’t know everything you do in your spare time. Could’ve found some random girl to pass the time.

Jaune:Rubes…

Ruby:Joking, I tease. Seriously though, I’m not letting you sleep on the couch in your own home.

Jaune:Well I’m not leaving you on the couch.

Ruby:Then I guess we’re sharing a bed! *hands on hips*

Jaune:I guess we are- excuse me?

Ruby:You heard me! *flustered* I’m not backing down so compromising is all that’s left.

No amount of expecting could prepare Jaune for that answer. Ruby and him had only dated for nearly two months before they broke it off. They had a few…experiences together; but nothing as bold or as intimate as one might expect. Certainly nothing that required them sleeping together in a shared bed. There were missions out in the wild but that wasn’t the same at all! There were no grimm around to keep an eye on.

Jaune:You’re serious, aren’t you?

Ruby:When have I ever joked about my treatment towards you? I refuse to take from you! But uhhh *rubs head* I might need proper sleep wear. I don’t think I packed that. Hehe, whoops.

Jaune: *inhales* Unpack and take your bath if you need it. I get you something cozy.

Ruby:Sounds like a plan!

How did this happen!? How did a night become so stressful, and yet Jaune wasn’t upset by the turn of events. It was surprising more than anything.

Ruby walked into the bedroom wearing his black basketball shorts and her own tank top she surprisingly grabbed from a pile of clothes. The shorts were a tad big on her but she mind. It would’ve matched the blue tank top he had on currently. He also wore a pair of orange shorts. Her eyes directed themselves at the bed. It was barely bigger than a twin.

Ruby:Never thought I’d love being petite until now.

Jaune:Couch is still an option for m-

The girl ran past him and flopped onto the bed. Despite her stubbornness, Ruby could tell her face was little red. Between the sheets and clothes, Jaune’s scent was very noticeable. He turned off the lights but she could still see his eyes on her as he walked towards the bed.

Jaune:You’re not gonna let me sleep on top of the covers while you’re underneath, are?

Ruby:Okay now that’s actually cruel no matter how you look at it. No one should be struggling to pull up a cover in their sleep.

He couldn’t argue with that. He pulled the cover and got into bed with her. Normally he’d sleep facing the wall, but as he was greeted with silver eyes inches away, Jaune’s face grew hot immediately. Time to face the door!

Jaune:Night~

No more words were spoken, at least for awhile. Moonlight barely pierced the blinds but it was enough for Ruby to see the outline of Jaune’s body. Had he been working out? Though they kept in touch, they hadn’t hung out nearly as much after their breakup two months ago. Now they found themselves sharing the same bed; something completely foreign yet familiar to her. They had only been together as long as they’ve been apart. Now he felt closer than ever yet so far. Actually, that was part of the problem last time, but Ruby felt like this situation wasn’t at all the same.

Ruby:….You still awake?

Jaune:…..

Ruby:Jaune, you’re moving an inch. You’ve either died or currently holding your breath.

Jaune:*exhales* I was trying to ease tension.

Ruby:By passing out?

Jaune:Not my best idea. Buckled under pressure.

Ruby:Hehe, thanks again. I’ll be sure to pay you back.

Jaune:Ruby, I could’ve said no. You don’t owe me anything.

Ruby:I know but…it feels like I’m a squatter or bum otherwise.

Jaune:Pfft, what am I? A landlord?

Ruby:Hehe, I think you’re too kind for that job. You’d knock gently and say please.

Jaune: “I know times are tough but please pay by the first.”

Ruby: “But funds are so tight. I don’t have the money.”

Jaune: “You’re gonna get kicked out if you at least can’t put some money down.”

Ruby:… “There’s no other way I can pay, sir?”

She put her arm around him, making him jolt a little as she clung to him. She could feel his heart beating as her hand found Jaune’s chest.

Ruby:I’ll do anything

Jaune:*blushing*…. Anything?

Ruby:Name it.

Jaune removed her arm from his body. He turned around slowly, rolling overtop of Ruby and staring down at the blush stricken girl. The was painfully silent as they didn’t move an inch.

Ruby:W..Well? Name it.

Jaune:….You’re not the type of person to just throw yourself at a someone.

Ruby:When have you ever just been someone? And who knows, I’m not exactly the same person. Are you?

Jaune:You mean, “emotionally distant?”

Ruby:I…did say that, didn’t I? If it makes you feel better, I was a bit “reckless and pushy at times.” Guess that last part still rings true, given where we’re at.

Jaune:Don’t put it all on you. I…wasn’t trying too hard to avoid this. So, “anything?”

Ruby:*nods slowly*

Jaune:In that case, Ruby, do you wanna try us again?

Ruby:…That is…not what I thought you were going to say. *red*

Jaune:Changed or not, you aren’t the kind of person to do something like this on a whim or casual fun. Just like you know I’d never find some random stranger to pass the time. You put effort into what you want, and so do I.

Ruby:Sounds like our mutual breakup is more like we took a break. That…actually makes me feel a lot better. So there’s been no one else?

Jaune:Nope. Ruby, I did not change my locks. We still talked regularly.

Ruby:Cut me some slack. I’m no pro at all this, and I’m sorry if I made it feel like if you should’ve been-

Jaune lowered himself and silenced her apology. Ruby felt her heart leap, kissing him back instinctively and wrapping her arms around his shoulders. Two months without this was for too long. Their kiss ended but she refused to let him go.

Ruby:Just so we’re honest with each other, I may not actually know if Blake is at Yang’s. Sorry for lying.

Jaune:Heh, such a sneaky girlfriend I have.

Ruby:I can’t help that I missed my boyfriend. Now stay close. There’s not a lot of room in this bed~

Jaune:There’s enough for what I want to do. *leans in*

Ruby:Hehe, see? You really did change your sheets for nothing.

Being a huntsman was the dream, a civic duty with many ups and down. Right now, Ruby was a little down. A month out in the field had really taken the wind out of her sails, but thankfully it had ended in success. She lugged herself back to her apartment one step at a time. Upon opening the door, her eyes lit up as a big “Welcome Back” banner hung from the ceiling. The smell of fresh foods on platters made her stomach and the tv flashed with movie selections she had missed since she was gone.

Ruby turned to the kitchen to see her boyfriend, Jaune, walking out with another platter of sandwiches. He quickly noticed her and flashed a grin.

Jaune:Welcome back! Glad you’re safe.

Ruby:….*sniffling* When i gave you a key to house sit while I was away, I didn’t expect this!

Jaune:You told me your team was coming home and I…got a little excited. Please tell me they came here with you. I might’ve made too much.

Ruby:Oh don’t worry. I could eat a mountain and still make some leftovers. Last thing I wanna do is cook. *looks at tv shelf*….Did you buy me videos games?

Jaune:Technically I just really wanted to play them and thought to bring them over. A month was plenty of time to beat them.

Ruby:Jaune, I actually will cry. I love all of this but you make it feel like we didn’t keep in touch when possible.

Jaune:I know. *rubs head* I just…really missed you. A mission has never taken this long for either of us. Guess I got a little anxious hehe.

Ruby looked at the boy’s sheepish smile that made her heart feel full. She had remembered something funny Yang told her once. Something about daughters finding a little bit of their father in their significant others. The way Jaune was acting right now brought foggy memories of how Ruby’s dad always greeted mom home so lovingly and fretted about her safety. It made more sense now that Ruby has her own experiences leaving on dangerous trips.

Ruby walked up to Jaune with purpose, wrapping her arms around him tightly. Her hands spread across Jaune’s back while her head rested against the steady beat of his heart. His arms responded in kind, wrapping her in a warmth that made the fatigue of a journey melt away.

Ruby:I’m home.

Jaune:Welcome back.

Ruby:I smell awful, don’t I?

Jaune:Little bit. *squeezes tighter* still not gonna let go.

Ruby:*walks into room* Jaune? You in here?

Jaune:*laying on the couch* Over here.

Ruby:The trip to Vacou take you out?

Jaune:Everything took me out.

Ruby:That’s fair. You okay?

Jaune:I just need a bit of rest. Did you need something?

Ruby walks and lays down on the couch with him, his arms automatically wrapping around her to hold her close. Tension fades from her as she eases into the embrace.

Jaune:Is this for me or for you?

Ruby:Can’t it be both? Reminds me of nights going to Haven. Seems so long and now.

Jaune:You have no idea….

Ruby:Right…sorry. *rubs his back*

Jaune:I’m not upset.

Ruby:I know. I just…I don’t know. I miss this, us. Things aren’t like they used to be though.

Jaune:That’s not all bad. You’re glowing brighter than ever. For a time I never thought I’d see you ever again. Every day I thought of you.

Ruby:I’m sorry I yelled at you.

Jaune:I’m sorry I made you cry. *plays with her hair*

Ruby:…Jaune, things have been very difficult and time has changed lots of things. So…is there still an us, or is this moment just that? I mean it’s not like we really defined what we before, but I really, really don’t want lose what this is again.

Jaune:If you’re asking if I love you then the answer is I never stopped. We just have some quirks to figure out.

Ruby:*red*….*hides face* Now I know time has passed. You said it so casually.

Jaune:If I learned anything, it’s to say things when you can, right? *shuts eyes* I miss us too.

Ruby:Hehe, that’s a relief. I love you too. *looks up*

Jaune:Zzzzz

Ruby:…*smiles* Sweet dreams.

Talking about it

After RWBY+J arrived at Vacuo everything was almost like perfect. As the Tree said they were just in time when they were needed. It was amazing how all the kingdoms were united for the war against Salem. Hunters and huntresses united for the cause. Everyone organising for the day/s that this will take. It took just some time for RWBY+J to also be part of this. Everyone were so relieved that they were alive. However, during that time Jaune noticed something odd and he was finally able to talk about it with Ruby.

Jaune: Hey Ruby, can we talk for a moment?

Ruby: Oh... I-I need to talk to my team I’m sorry—

Jaune: I’m sure they’ll understand. Please just listen to me

Ruby: ... okay

Jaune: Are we... *sighs* Are we good?

Ruby: What do you mean?

Jaune: You know what I mean. In the Ever After we—

Ruby: Jaune of course we are. Don’t worry alright? Can I go now—

Jaune: Then why you don’t talk to me? Ever since we arrived every time I wanna talk to you, you aren’t available there’s always an excuse just like now and when you want to tell me something is either your team or someone else who does it for you. It’s like you’re avoiding me and I can’t help but think it’s because of what happened in the Ever after-

Ruby: It’s not that. It’s just...I-I don’t think this is a good time-

Jaune: Then when would it be a good time? We are about to face a war and it’s better to settle things now.

Ruby: Please it’s not what you think. I-I’m sure we can talk it later. It’s not that much important now-

Jaune: It is important to me! *sighs* Ruby I’m sorry for what I said in the Ever After I wasn’t in my right mind. You’re an special friend to me and I need to know if you could forgive me, if we could be friends just like before..

Ruby: Jaune... neither of us were in our right mind I also hurt you back there. I’m the one who feels sorry. The thing is.. I don’t think our relationship is going to be the same as before. Whenever I see you I think about us arguing there, I can’t face myself talking to you like before, it hurts me that I hurt a dear friend and that I might do it again. Because I know I’m not perfect and you don’t deserve a friend like me-

Jaune: Ruby.. You know I understand for what you went through. I don’t need a perfect friend. No one is but that’s the risk we take when we trust in someone. If I could go back in time I would choose you as my friend again without a doubt because you’re just the friend I need.. just the way you are.

Ruby: *sniffs* Why are you doing this? Why does it matter now?

Jaune: It matters to me because I care about what you think, I care about you. In my hardest times you brought the best out of me, and also to the people around you. Perfect or not I loved that you were capable to give hope in any circumstance and you’re still that person! I want to remind you I still trust you and nothing it’s going to change that even if something happens during the war, you can count on me

Ruby: Stop... *sniffs* You know what you are doing. *sniffs* You know me so well and that’s the thing you knew where to hurt me but you also know how... *sniffs* y-you also know how to-

Jaune: Ruby?

Ruby: You also know how to make me feel things! Things I never experienced before. It’s so strange *covering her face* How can you say those things so easily? I can barely look you in the eyes. Is it because I’m the only one feeling this?

Jaune: Ruby... *getting closer to her*

Ruby: *takes steps back* To be honest with you I can’t be your friend again without feeling uneasy about these feelings. I just can’t pretend that nothing changed because it did and I can’t ignore it. Whenever I see you, I feel overwhelmed, I feel angry, sad, fear, relieved, happy, nervous then again angry, sad-it’s like an endless cycle. I have a lot of thoughts and all of them get in a conclusion.. but I shouldn’t feel like this. We are about to face a war that depends on everyone’s life I can’t- I mustn’t feel like this. That’s why I distanced myself from you. I didn’t wanna make you feel uncomfortable so we can stay focus on what’s more important. I know it was selfish I’m sorry for putting you through all this..

Jaune: You... You are not the only one dealing with those feelings.. *gets closer*

Ruby: *raises her head* I- No- D-Don’t look at me like that. W-we can’t. What if something happens? What if someone dies? What if I have to make a sacrifice? I don’t want to see you suffer again I want you to be happy even if it’s not with m-

Before she could finish Jaune kissed her. Instantaneous yet so gently. His hands were around her face, kissing her shaking lips softly, evoking from her sensations she had never know she was capable of feeling.

Jaune: Wouldn’t be better to have something to look forward after the war? And if you want to know I’ll choose you to spend the rest of my life with *smiles*

After a long trek through the desert and day full of reunions, the time to rest finally came. Ruby did her best to unwind and frankly that included late night eating. She didn’t realize how badly she missed Remnant food until she tasted it. Charmed by the taste of a sandwich, she was caught completely off guard noticing Jaune quickly stand up from the couch. Poor girl nearly joked!

Ruby:J-cough Jaune!?

Jaune:Oh…it’s just you. *sits down* Sorry. Hearing you spooked me.

Ruby:Are you sleeping on the couch?

Jaune:No. I was…deep in thought.

Even from here, Ruby could see the tiredness on his face and under his eyes. Leaving her sandwich on the counter, she walked over to Jaune and sat by him.

Ruby:Can’t sleep? Looks like we’re in the same boat. Though I would’ve turned on a little light.

Jaune:Didn’t want to wake anyone. It’s fine. You can keep eating. I’ll head to bed soon.

Ruby:…I thought we were passed putting on brave faces. It’s not like anyone won’t understand, right? A lot has happened. Too much; especially for you.

Jaune:Don’t sell yourself short. Are you…okay?

Ruby:I feel better than I used to and I know I’m capable of feeling even greater with time. I’d like to think I’ve gotten over the biggest hump.

Jaune:That’s good to hear.

Ruby:What about you?

Jaune:I’m trying not to dwell on past mistakes. Frankly, the things I see when I close my eyes are more about the countless days that followed. All the nights when I was…alone.

Ruby:…This isn’t me kicking myself or trying to deflect, but I really am sorry my plan didn’t go smoothly. I know we can’t plan for everything and there is good that came out of it. Still, the Ever After caused harm too.

Jaune:I’m sorry again, about yelling at you I mean. I’m also sorry you didn’t feel like you could come to me for-

Ruby:That’s on me. Really, it is. I can’t help but think back to before all of this. At Beacon, I told you we couldn’t afford to make mistakes because we’re leaders now with people that count on us. Looking back on it, that’s pretty bad advice. At the very least it’s damming.

Jaune:You spoke earnestly and said what I needed to hear to try my best. I’m thankful for that. Neither of us could’ve had known just how much we’d cling to that idea. Life is messy.

Ruby:Life is scary. Jaune, do you…see them in your nightmares? Sometimes I do.

Jaune:Not in a long time. At some point nightmare was what tomorrow brought. Also…I was more afraid of you. Of how you might look at me for…

Ruby:…

Jaune:Ruby? How can you look at me? How can you forgive me? At the end of the day, it’s me who-

Ruby:I could never blame you.

Her voice was so gentle as her eyes watered at the sight of Jaune’s tormented gaze. Ruby slowly reached out to run the side of her face before pulling his down onto her lap. Her fingers played with his hair, the focus on the white strands.

Ruby:I will never blame you. It’s not your fault. I wasn’t there but I know in the end you did everything you could, both you and Weiss. We’ve been apologizing a lot, but I do want to say than you. *crying* Because I know deep down I wouldn’t have the strength to honor that plea, so let’s stop hurting ourselves with what we did or didn’t do. Jaune, thank you for easing Penny’s pain. I will fight tooth and nail to never leave you alone like that again for both our sakes. So please…get some rest. We need some rest.

Yang:Water?

Weiss:Check!

Yang:Gym clothes?

Blake:Check

Yang:Leader to guide/bond with us as we test our limits?

Ruby:Cry all you want. I can’t just change my plans. *grabs notes*

Yang:But you could!

Weiss:I can’t believe you got roped into helping Jaune study for his test.

Ruby:Weiss, it’s called “helping a friend.” Plus we made these plans first. It’s not like you’ll be alone.

On queue, a knock on the door made Blake open it. Nora came jumping in with her gym bag and already limbered up. Ren and Pyrrha.

Ren:She’s very excited about the new gym installed.

Nora:Today we sweat!!!

Pyrrha:Let’s try to leave the place intact. Ms. Goodwitch hasn’t forgiven us for the cafeteria.

Ruby:Is my naïve weapon enthusiast ready for me?

Pyrrha:He’s at his desk frantically writing notes. Y’know…if you need any help-

Ruby:I may not be a star student but when it comes to the history of weapons and their engineering, I might as well teach the class.

Weiss:Now if only you applied half that enthusiastic in Dust reaction experiments.

Ruby:Nobody can be perfect at everything.

Blake:The two star students of our year are literally in this room.

Weiss and Pyrrha: *all smiles*

Ruby:Pfft, so lightning struck twice? My point stands. Either way, I’ll have Jaune passing with flying colors in no time so don’t worry about it. Have fun everyone. We’ll join next time.

Pyrrha:If you insist.

Ren:It’s probably for the best.

Blake:Yeah we someone to save us from Yang and Nora’s routine ideas.

Yang:It’s not that bad!

Nora:The pain is weakness leaving the body.

Ruby:And on that threatening note… *grabs books* I’m off to across the hall!

Everyone funneled out of the dorm room and went on their way. Ruby waited for them to full turn the corner before knocking for times. The door was opened by Jaune and she gladly walked in. Pyrrha wasn’t joking; his desk had papers stacked and books opened.

Ruby:Wow, hard a work I see?

Jaune:I try. I’m just a bad test taker.

Ruby:We’ll have no fear! I’ve made mock tests and flash cards to drill all knowledge into you! Stick with me and-

The knight’s arms suddenly wrapped around her waist as he gently pressed his lips against hers, making Ruby jolt. A smile spread quickly on her face as she kissed him back harder while her arms hung off his shoulders. As their lips separated, Ruby couldn’t help but giggle as she went into for another chaste kiss. The slight grunt of approval he gave as he held her tighter made the girl shake her head playfully.

Ruby:Easy now. We should at least attempt to study. I talked a big about you passing. That means I should actually teach you. There’s an entire chapter dedicated to hand placements.

Jaune:Hehe, you are so ridiculous.

Ruby:Yet you looked intrigued. We can smooch later.

Jaune:It would be easier to get kissing out of the way now so our friends don’t potentially nterrupt later. Isn’t breaks an important part of studying? Besides, I don’t think I can survive an enraged Yang even if she’s tired and sore.

Ruby:Hmmm you drive a hard bargain, but I can’t have you too tired to learn. Tell you what, take the test and every correct answer gives you a kiss. FYI, there’s fifty questions.

Jaune:Oooo that is a good deal. Got a reward for if I actually pass the real test?
