A very interesting question this one as well. Were the Muses actual women or feminine divine principles of inspiration, vision and creativity like the Eastern Dakinis? When someone is referred to as their offspring (Hyacinthus and Thamyris too) then this may signify the bestowment of a certain grace, of the poetic gift (the Celtic cauldron of Cerridwen being a similar symbolism) and not necessarily a physical birth and motherhood. The Muses were seen as virgins but this kind of virginity in ancient Greek thinking mostly stood for independent spirit. So, they choose to whom they donate their higher contributions and the "chosen persons" communicate with powers out of the ordinary this way sharing their incredible talents with the world, their communities, and enriching the human experience and horizons. It's all about expansion, alternative point of views, and a calling that cannot be silenced. The nine Muses all originating from an archetypal single One, from the emanations of the Great Goddess. Nowadays, women can be both inspiring and creative, be artists themselves so that is a beautiful mission, allow me to add this notion.
