I’ve been acquainted with 88 Killa for I’d like to think at least a year, maybe less. I watched him at Andy’s in Denton and saw him sporting the Funkytown jacket and I was like, “Hey!” because it’s not everyday you see a super dope MC repping the Funk in Denton...... I knew this guy had something. Turns out, he’s been getting down with Denton for a while and more recently you’ll see his name all over Dallas line ups. You can find him at Beauty Bar almost every Thursday with DJ Sober, a combo that all but sets the the dance floor on fire. 

Under the label, DEFDISCO, 88 Killa released 88 BPM and had a release show at Spinster Records in Dallas. 

And he’s already released one video from the EP, Boomerang, directed by the notorious, Jeremy Biggers. Jeremy uses very simple concepts that seem to have a profound impact when paired with someone as talented and buzz worthy as 88 Killa. A Simple Black and White Scheme, a little smoke and well placed gold jewelry kept me intrigued the entire length of the song.

I’ve listened to the album now a few times. I like to do the “Cleaning Test” where I turn music up as loud as my device will let me, and I clean to it. 

88 BPM is only 6 tracks long, hence the EP status. I almost favor this approach vs a full length album. I’m always about making people want MORE rather than wishing you had don less- like fast forward a track or two, etc. Showing the EP was well thought out, each track flows seamlessly from one to the other and so on, I dig the song arrangement. 88 Killa definitely hits the younger demographic with the content and production. Not quite Trap music, but it uses the elements of trap and even sneaks in a good Boom Bap track complete with cuts by DJ Sober. 

Hulen Mall gets a shout out right away with “Hulen Mall Legend” solidifying his Fort Worth roots. The track starts out with a southern rap sample talking about “swangin” and “diamonds in my teeth” with breaks involving the same sample, only 88 Killa is having a phone conversation over talking on the phone. Takes me back to the days we all piled into a friends car to go to the mall, or anywhere other than home at least. 88 gives us a little test of his vocal abilities towards the end, laughing it off with “Y’all don’t want it. “ 

On “Boomerang” 88 Killa says, “Don’t call me underrated, I don’t play that shit.” Duly noted. This one is definitely bass heavy making it difficult not to move around while bobbing your head to the cadence of 88 Killa’s flow. He mentions not to be called underrated again (taking it that’s a pet peeve?) in “Mixtapes” that feaures more of a backpackers production fresh with DJ cuts. 88 Killa flexes his lyrical muscles in this track, something to appeal the older hip hop heads of his fan base. 

He ends 88 BPM with “Free Before 11″ where he gives Beauty Bar and DJ Sober a shout. This was a more story of 88 Killa’s life, “I ain’t into fashion, I”m into to cashing checks” he boasts. Another line I’m fond of is “You ain’t a real G til you get your heart broke.” Boy tell me about it!!! He gives a shout out to Purgatory, Cowboys, Myspace Top 8, Venice Beach, Rhythm City and more. Stuff I think would take us all back a few years. And if it doesn’t look them up or ask your mom :) 

88 Killa did a good job of keeping this EP bumping with the beats and including a few nostalgic and modern day references. Most of the EP has elements of the “New Sound” that’s popular now with  just enough classic hip hop elements (like the boom bap sound, word play and cuts in “Mixtapes”) to pay homage to Hip Hop, but not completely sway the younger listeners away. I think the newer elements in the EP are something the older generation might not appreciate AT FIRST, but if they just take another listen I think they’d find themselves grooving right along.
