you think it might be a bit too late to go back home. it might also be a bit late to think about that for the first time, but you’ve stopped caring about standards by now. it sure seems like the rest of them no longer have any to measure you with.

of course, some part of you still holds out hope that this is just another thing you haven’t understood yet- that everything will be fine, that it isn’t that bad, that you can laugh with your friends again.  that’s all you were here for, after all. a laugh. some friends. not this. 

not death, and fighting, and all the ways that they have found to hurt each other. you used to joke about being a different species, but you only really recognized it too late, when you realized how they replicated the exact same anger and betrayal you saw back home, only with new words, new actions, new faces. they refuse to repeat themselves, and you saw it as a kindness. they stop baring teeth and you mistake it as some sort of peace. you are not helpless, no, far from it, but you cannot win a fight you never knew existed. you know now. you are not helpless. you have seen this all before, with different actions, words, faces. different people. and this time, you care enough about them to step in.
