idk thinking about how Rayla can be very short sighted yes (2x07 for example, 7x02, going after Viren) but she is also very much someone who thinks about the Broader Consequences. Like when she sees the egg, she immediately realizes and devotes herself to what it could mean for the whole world even at great personal cost to herself and her body. She's the one who wants to leave the Moon Nexus faster in S2, keep moving in S3, and keeping away from the Drakeriders and Finnegrin in S4 and S5 respectively. In 4x05, 5x01, 6x01, and 6x05 she persists in staying focused even if that means putting other things (rightly or wrongly) like her family on the backburner: "There's too much at stake" -> "But I can't help you yet" -> "but I know our mission comes first" -> "I want to help my parents, but I won't let it bias me." Which of course is why she is also willing to sacrifice Callum in 7x09 "for all of Xadia / my heart for Xadia".
But one thing being world-and-consequence focused is that in 6x03 when she learns what Callum has done dark magic wise, even without knowing he gave up the spell that would've doomed Domina, she immediately understands the potential problem and escalation and tries to pre-emptively cut it off: "If you ever have to choose between me or the greater good, do the right thing [and sacrifice me]" because she knows if she doesn't say it/tell Callum to, there's no way in hell that he will, because she understands the endgame and what is at stake now
objectively a funny line re: Opeli not recognizing someone she actively knew and hated and saw daily for like, 10+ years, but it always makes me think of something we discussed in my 19th century women's lit course of one of the holdovers of the gothic genre / development was the idea of being so emotionally altered that your physical appearance both totally changes and doesn't (also Cathy I's transformation in Wuthering Heights), enough for your eye/skin colour etc to be the same but for you and your 'essence' to be unrecognizable. i wish i remembered what it was called specifically because it was really interesting as a concept (and arguably being implemented here) and i always enjoy it whenever it shows up
