The World Trade Center officially opened on this day in 1973. Each standing 100 stories tall, the towers were not only the tallest buildings in the world but the largest by floor area, with ten million square feet of office space. The World Trade Center complex, built between 1966 and 1975 featured seven buildings that included a mall, the underground PATH station, and a hotel. A year ago we released our update on the World Trade Center complex, SIXTEEN ACRES, SEVENTEEN YEARS, evaluating the status of each site on the campus. The first major development since then happened this week, when the state released a request for proposals for 5 WTC. Most notably, the request would permit a 900' residential skyscraper on the site – the first residential building on the World Trade Center site as residential was harshly opposed during the initial planning sessions in the years following 9/11. One and a half years after construction on St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church at the World Trade Center was stalled due to lack of funds from the Archdiocese, the church has yet to see any progress. Typical of projects by architect Santiago Calatrava, who also designed the $4 billion Oculus, the cost has surged from its original $20 million estimates to $78 million. In December, the Port Authority, who owns the land, offered to take over construction and redesign to be more financially feasible. But there has been no sign of any progress and the church could join the list of stalled projects at the WTC site.
