Angel Summoning
Dear Marie,
I got your missive on wishing to learn to summon angels. I can teach you the art, of course, but before I do I have to make sure you're clear on a few clear points before I do so, so please forgive this letter's lack of practical spells. Actually, there is only one point, really: do not do so unless it is absolutely necessary! If you find yourself encountering a demon or a monster and you can't deal with it through more conventional means, by all means, attempt an angel summoning, but once you've done so, run like hell! Do not stick around, do not try to see the angel, do not even make sure you did it right--just leave!
The first reason is that, even if you do everything right, it might not work. Too many people have been crying wolf for too long, I'm afraid, doing something they should only do in the direst of emergencies because they want to see an angel, and the result is that our cries often fall on deaf ears. Reversing the trend alone is reason enough for only summoning an angel when you well and truly need one, but alas, it's not the only reason.
The second reason is that religion and popular culture has gotten the nature of our relationship to the angels very, very wrong. The enemy of my enemy is my enemy's enemy--nothing more and nothing less. Too many people have stayed to gawk, not realizing that even if the elephant bears the ant no ill will, that doesn't mean it won't step on it. Between angel summoners dying in the encounter and angels just not showing up when summoned (see “boy who called wolf” above), it's little wonder the art is nearly dead.
The third reason is that, well, there are times when even ambivalence is too much to ask for. When the ancient mystics learned to summon angels, they were doing something that millions of animals of every kind have learned to do--draw the attention of the predators of our predators. When you summon an angel, you are doing the metaphysical equivalent of ringing a dinner bell; when the angel shows up, there had better be something tastier than you for them to eat, because some of them are not so big that a tiny morsel like yourself is beneath their notice. I was not kidding when I instructed you to run.
Finally, demons and monsters are not necesarilly stupid. Some of them have learned ways to counter this trick, with methods ranging from disrupting magic itself to pulling their own version of it; angels are not themselves the top of the food chain, either, and you do not want to be around when their predator shows up. Obviously because the thing that was hunting you is now free to continue doing so, but also I'm given to understand that their very existence is somehow...wrong. A sentiment that gives me some pause, coming as it does from people experienced in dealing with demons and angels.
Love, Alice.
