Mount Whitney is usually just a jagged silhouette glimpsed from the highway as people hurry to other destinations. Sometimes folks take a moment to absorb the beauty of the Eastern Sierra and snap a photo of Mt Whitney while camping at Alabama Hills. But for those who submit, peak bag, or slowly amble up the mountain, a whole new world presents itself. Who knew the back side of those jagged peaks would reveal gently sloping talus fields, sparkling emerald jewels, and endless majestic views. Mt Whitney is so much more that just a silhouette or a peak to check off a list. The longing for my next trip starts to build before I get back home. But then procrastination sets in and I completely avoid the planning part. This was a good day in the desert. I needed a bit of a reset with old familiar faces and a bit of wide open wilderness. After some hard knocks last year I gave myself some time to ponder what is important in my life. So, what is important to me? Like most people I would always say “friends and family”, but honestly I was always distracted and never acted on it 100%. My concept of stability or my selfishness always go in the way.
