Scrophularia californica, in common name the California bee plant, is a native to - you guessed it - California! It occurs surrounding California's central valley and most frequently in southern California below the transverse ranges down into Baja California. From the order Lamiales, it can be recognized when not in bloom by its square stem and large and widely spaced tooth-edged leaves. Even when in bloom the flowers are small and easily overlooked where it grows in shade, but not by bees despite the coloration as bees do not perceive red flowers well.) Hummingbirds and small wasps are also noted visitors to the flowers and the foliage hosts several species of moth and butterfly larvae.
One quirky thing about S. californica is the flower morphology - the stigma is presented first and droops before the anthers are presented - not simultaneously. A fifth sterile stamen (staminode) is appressed to the upper surface of the tube, and from my reading, the reason for this is not yet known!
Lonicera subspicata, or Southern Honeysuckle is a plant native to central California through the northern part of the Baja California Peninsula. It has small flowers in a classic honeysuckle shape which appear in spring through summer, producing yellow to red berries in late summer through fall. Though restricted to a relatively small geographic range, it is quite densely populated in the central part of its range.
A fairly conventional Phalaenopsis orchid in UVIVF and traditional light. Almost every Phalaenopsis I’ve looked at with UV-induced fluorescence has been this same consistent red coloring with little difference due to patterns.

A revisit to the Phyllostachys aurea cross-sections I posted a while back. This is a very popular and common bamboo which spreads easily through underground rhizomes. Unlike trees, bamboo (and other grasses) cannot experience secondary growth - that is, once they have matured in a matter of months, an individual cane, or culm, will not experience noteworthy thickening. In contrast, an outer layer of cambium gives many perennial dicotyledons and gymnosperms the possibility of growing thicker in trunk, branch, and root.
Mimosa pudica also known as sensitivity plant among other things. This fun plant is touch-sensitive and will close its pinnate leaves up when touched. It’s one of the few plants that responds to stimuli with rapid movement.
