Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode I has RetroAchievements and I got them all
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is a game I never thought I would see myself coming back to, because for me, the game was ruined, but that is a story for another time. So, Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode One got achievements in the form of retroachievements, and this was one game I was not going to touch, but then it happened that my friend asked me to or wanted me to do Sonic 4 Retroachievements
And I have put it off as I asked myself if I wanted to play Sonic 4 again, and I could have ignored the request until he found someone else to ask or got bored of asking me but then there was that tiny itch to know what did Sonic 4 look and sound like on the Nintendo WII, as I never had Sonic 4 on the Nintendo Wii, but I had it on Steam, Microsoft Xbox 360, and Playstation 3. So I bit the bullet, got my LEGAL copy of Sonic 4, and began my adventure.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode I RetroAchievements – Are they good?
The achievements for the game are not bad, and they are pretty fair in my opinion. They need some skill, and some of these achievements are fun to do; I had imagined a worse experience, but the ride was pretty fun overall. This achievement set was given life by Julysse on Mar 19, 2026. I can say these achievements can be put into their own category as they have levels to each achievement, while some are simple, and others would need a bit more work to get. While nothing too insane, I will say you will need some skill at playing platformer games at the bare minimum to have a better time.
The easy ones – Beat the game.
Beating the game doesn’t take much to do, but since this is a Dimps and Sonic game, you should be ready to learn the stage gimmick for some levels that will ask the player to overcome to beat the stage, and by proxy, the game. Some of them are not that hard, and these will be your free achievements if you can beat the game.
Beat the game with all the emeralds and get the emeralds
This, too, is very easy, and I thought this would be hard, but after playing and getting used to the controls, the special stages are not hard, just annoying to deal with, but once I found my flow, I was able to make some progress in these achievements
Although I made this harder on myself as I was trying to get the speedrun achievements for the Chaos Emeralds and getting the emeralds to knock out all the achievements for speedrunning the special stages in one go, it did work out in the end.
The other easy ones – Ring Attack
Now, some achievements may be a bit of a challenge in this Sonic 4 Retroachievements set, and this will need trial and error. These are fights with Dr. Eggman or Dr. Robotnik, where the achievement will act for the player’s skill in doing said task to unlock it.
Eggman challenges
So challenges 1 and 2 are straightforward and can be done with little to no issue unless you are not being careful, in which case, good luck. These should not be hard. I can see Challenge 2 being tough for some players, but these are easy to overcome.
Challenge 3 is where things pick up. You need to beat the boss and clear the stage and boss without getting hit, and that is going to be hard, but the best course of action is to remember the stage layout and enemy placements, and if you can do that, you can nab this achievement without much issue.
I had to load up Sonic 4 to play Mad Gear Zone Act 4, and it was not that bad, gang. If these players are having trouble with this achievement, I dread when they need to do a real challenge, but I do not agree with this nerf, as it was not needed. If you take away the challenge, why bother making a challenge if you are going to bend over backwards and remove that challenge?
Challenge 5 is a real challenge since you must E.G.G. Station Zone without dying. While this is a no-brainer, this one can be hard if you are careless, and the only fight to worry about is the final fight; the other fights matter too, but if you can get to the final fight without dying a lot, then the final fight should be the only fight on your mind.
And it comes down to how reckless you are. If you are very reckless, this will be your worst achievement to unlock; if you are not reckless and good at the game, then you will have a good time here. The final fight should be treated with respect, as if you mess around, you will get punished for it.
On to the next set of achievements, which, while not hard, may take you a few tries to remember the stage layout to get the fastest time to get the achievements, and it is speedrunning achievements.
Speedrun challenge
So these challenges were fun, learning the path you need to take to find the fastest route to getting the targeted time or less. Some of the later stages will need to be redone since the fastest route is not always clear, or you had bad movement, or got stuck and wasted time.
Finding the fast route, avoiding the slow route if possible, and avoiding taking hits or dying is the key to getting these done, and these were fun for me, as some of the levels were a blast to replay, but most of these, I got along the way, as I did not want to repeat the levels over after beating the game. The only threat in this challenge is pits, crushers, and yourself, if you are reckless.
Since the chaos emeralds are speedrun challenges as well, I can talk about them here.
Speedrun Chaos Emeralds Challenge
These were the things I dreaded the most since I only played the other versions of Sonic 4 that were anything but the Nintendo Wii, and I had to learn/get used to the controls on the Wii, which was a learning experience for me, and this may apply to those who join the challenge.
This is not hard, but the only stages that may be an issue are Special stages 4, 6, and 7. These stages need planning on where to go, good ring collecting, and avoiding bumpers to save time. Once you get that down, you can go claim your prize once you earn it, and these are fun, if a little hard to figure out and control at first. But that was something I had to learn anew. Lol.
And the Hard one, but the one that is more annoying than hard.
Lighting reflexes achievement
This one is more annoying since it is a one-shot, and missing means you need to redo 4 to 6 minutes of E.G.G Station each time you fail, and this is an auto runner, meaning you have to remember the path, and even if you remember the path, you could still mess up.
This was on the Xbox 360, and on that version, if you got all the rings on the ending along with beating the game with all emeralds, you would get a Sonic full body suit, and it was pretty cool, a pain in the ass to get but still pretty cool, and it is still a pain after all these years later.
Final Thoughts
I went into Sonic 4 dreading the game because one, I already didn’t like the game, and two, being someone who plays Sonic 4 on the rare full moons, it was not many times I played this, and not many times I would be willing to play Sonic 4 just because it is not my game anymore. But to my shock, getting the achievements was easy and quite fun to do for the Nintendo Wii, and the experience was a fairly smooth one, minus the special stages and the lighting reflexes achievements. I had fun playing Sonic 4. It wasn’t the worst.
And for the players who are vocal and loud about Sonic 4 being an awful game, maybe play something else. I didn’t have any of the issues that other players had, and I’m not sure how they had so many issues, but the game is not bad, but it’s not good either. It sits right in the middle. If you want RetroAchievements set to try out, give Sonic 4 a go. If you are good at Sonic games and platformers, you should have a blast, as this was a fun experience, and you can’t go wrong with an achievement set that is fun and well-coded. Again, having some skill in platformers will go a long way.
Don’t let the bad players tell you the game is bad. It’s not that bad; the game can be a fun experience. Yes, you will need to get used to the controls before you can get moving, but once you do. The achievement hunting and playing the game will become a good experience for the most part.

6 years ago, I wanted to create a video game just like I wanted.
2 years ago, I started to use GameMaker Studio 2.
And today, I continue to work on it.
Bounce 2 is a 1v1 physics ball sport with four distinct modes, including a Party Mode that randomly shuffles nine mini-game variants between goals. Up to four players locally, or frame-synced online.

My final project consists of creating a sprite package on the itch.io website. I have chosen to improve on past design sprites and create new sprites in accordance with the Knight Jump Game, which was a 2D medieval-themed adventure platformer in which the goal was to avoid dangerous spikes and jump across the block steps and ultimately escape the castle. Â
During the draft feedback session we did in class last week, I asked about how to improve on or what to change regarding the art aspects of the current game. A couple of people told me that currently the spikes match the background grey color and also pointed out how, in the game, the pop-up spikes feature was too fast while playing the game. Therefore, I decided to upgrade the spikes. My first step was changing the color. I chose a brighter sea green color which would contrast with the grey background, making the spikes easier to see during gameplay. I also made the spikes have a bench base so the spikes will emerge from a separate flat platform that is not the regular game blocks themselves. This not only adds to better visibility, but also you foresee an obstacle and can expect something different because it doesn't look like regular platform steps. Lastly, I also made the popup animation smoother, and now you can gradually see the spikes popping up. I also made just a tiny spike option for more variety.Â
Next, while I was playing games other teams had made, I realised many had created certain collectables and tokens in which players would have to collect all before moving on to the next section of the game. I really liked that idea and drew inspiration from it, in which I made coins and diamond gem sprites which the soldier could collect. These could be placed on different platforms so that the player has to jump and reach all platforms in order to move on to the next levels. Also, since the game implemented collecting a key, I made a treasure chest animation to go along with the concept. The idea is that at the final level, the keys collected help open the treasure chest in the end, filled with valuable wealth! Â
Additionally, I was suggested to add more variety to the background, and so I decided to make decoration sprites like options of a hanging fire lantern to go on the walls. I made two different aesthetic options to choose from. I also created a door and door opening animation to add to the levels.Â
Lastly, I also made a rock debris falling-down animation sprite and a soldier holding up his shield sprite to protect themselves from the rocks to add in more challenging aspects to continue advancing the game.
We recently took on a bigger challenge, of further developing our game, Monster Rush. We added two additional members to our team, both programmers, giving us an even number of both artists and programmers! Our current team members are Maria Pena, Ethan Le, Noah Jones, and Andrea Arellano.
We have taken all the notes and suggestions from our play testers, and are close to getting an improved version of our game up. So far, we have added a home screen, level selection menu, tutorial level, and made edits to the currently available level.
We have upgraded the art, which is something we are excited to present. The characters are keeping their original designs, but are now more rendered and detailed. There has been an addition of three new weapons as well: an ice hammer, a fire wand, and a healing shield
We will be pushing out these updates soon!
Sound effects, as requested by players, will also be available. (Music as well.....? cross your fingers). These are being produced with GarageBand.
The upgrades we have made so far have significantly improved the quality of the game and made it more engaging than the previous available version (aside from current bugs). Having multiple play testers has let us learn and move forward with improvements, and we are hoping the new version is more enjoyable.
We are looking forward to having a clean and put-together new version with one or two fully functioning levels available within the next few days! We appreciate any comments and feedback from players. Send it our way!
