Watching 227,
and I'm loving this show. I also love that each episode is like, 25 minutes long. I'm almost through with season 1 and I started watching yesterday.
I think Sandra and Pearl are my favorite characters. Pearl makes me laugh with her sassiness in every episode.

DR. CHRISTINE HOUSTON
BIO
Dr. Christine Houston is a native of Chicago and a graduate of Parker High School. She continued her education at the University of Illinois and Roosevelt University. In 1954, she enlisted in the United States Air Force, where she served honorably before transitioning into family life as a devoted wife and mother.
In 1973, Dr. Houston enrolled at Kennedy-King College with a mission to expand her knowledge and to demonstrate to her three sons that it is never too late to pursue education. Balancing school, a full-time job, and family responsibilities, this decision became one of the most rewarding of her life.
While attending Kennedy-King College, Dr. Houston was encouraged to enter a playwriting contest. Rising to the challenge, she wrote “Two Twenty-Seven,” a play inspired by her childhood growing up at 227 E. 48th Street in Chicago’s historic Bronzeville community. The play earned widespread acclaim, winning the ANTA West, Lorraine Hansberry, and Norman Lear Playwriting Awards. This success led her to Los Angeles, where she wrote for the television series “The Jeffersons.” Actress Marla Gibbs later performed “Two Twenty-Seven” at her theater, earning an NAACP Image Award for Best Actress, while Dr. Houston received the NAACP Image Award for Playwriting.
Dr. Houston went on to become a staff writer for the television series “Punky Brewster.” In 1985, “Two Twenty-Seven” was adapted into the hit NBC television sitcom “227,” solidifying her legacy in television history.
Amid her professional success, Dr. Houston faced personal challenges that called her back to Chicago, where she cared for her ailing mother. Later, her husband of more than forty years was diagnosed with dementia. During this difficult time, she returned to school at Chicago State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Communication, Media Arts, and Theatre in 2006.
While a student, she authored her first novel, “Laughing Through the Tears,” published in 2013 by Life To Legacy. The book, based on her real-life experience as a caregiver, received recognition and support from AARP, which sponsored a major book signing event alongside experts from the Alzheimer’s Association and the University of Chicago. Her work has helped educate and support countless individuals navigating dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
Dr. Houston is currently developing a screenplay based on her novel, with the goal of bringing greater awareness to the early signs and impact of dementia. She also serves as an educator at Chicago State University, where she teaches Playwriting, Writing for Television, and Screenwriting. In collaboration with her mentor, Dr. Christine List, she has co-authored a textbook to guide aspiring writers.
In May 2025, she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Chicago State University, officially becoming Dr. Christine Houston—a testament to her lifelong dedication to education, storytelling, and perseverance.
A woman of deep faith, Dr. Houston inspires all she encounters with her signature greeting, “God loves you,” and her favorite reminder: “It isn’t over ‘til it’s over.” She continues to encourage her students—and all who hear her story—to pursue their dreams at any stage of life.
