You need three things to make a rainbow: sunlight, water, and you.
The sunlight provides the rays, the water refracts them, and you need to be at the right place, at the right time, to see it happen.
I learned all this a couple of months ago when you sent me a video explaining how rainbows work.
“I wonder why rainbows form in a semicircle,” you’d wondered out loud earlier that day.
Then later, after you’d Googled and Youtubed, you told me that light can enter a single droplet of water, bounce off its inner surface like a mirror, and then exit at a sharp angle more beautiful and gentle than when it entered.
A rainbow, you said, is actually a full circle in front of you, but it appears half because the Earth is standing in the way of the rest of it.
“And this also means that you’re always at the centre of every rainbow you see.”
It was still drizzling when I got off my turbulent flight to Pula. Warm golden-hour sunlight hung low in the sky as I walked down the steps and tried to make my way to the bus.
“Why isn’t everyone moving?” I wondered. “Why do people keep looking the other way? I’m out here getting soaked out here goddammit!”
It wasn’t till I got on the bus and turned around that I saw what everyone else had been so captivated by. A rainbow unlike any I’d ever seen. So present. So saturated. So strong it literally reflected off the tarmac.
To make a rainbow, you need three things. Sunlight, without which we’d both be in darkness. Water, a dense medium to slow us down enough to enjoy the little things. And you.
You weren’t there with me on the tarmac in Pula, but seeing that rainbow reflected so strongly made me miss you with the same intensity. And then it dawned on me that moving forward, you’ll always be at the centre of every rainbow I see.
