I started the last episode in this set this morning. This time around I find myself captivated by the personal drama between Commander Straker and his family, a story I expected to be unnecessarily teased out for a lot longer. (I’ve been conditioned by too many traditional TV dramas and my expectations are low.) And for those keeping score, this means I’ve walked 3 days in a row so far. Finished this episode on my morning walk. I was thinking about what I said yesterday, that part of what makes this series distinct for @bigfinishprod is the harder edge. I’ve never thought of myself as a fan of military sci-fi, so that surprised me a bit. But then I remembered that I’m also a big Stargate fan. I had trouble getting to sleep last night, so I listened to the first episode of this set, and half of the second episode on my morning walk. While I’ve been a fan of @gerryandersontv since I first saw Captain Scarlet as a kid, I’ve never seen a single episode of UFO. So I don’t know how much of what I’m enjoying is from the original series and how much is new to this reimagining. Doesn’t matter to me: the first box set in this series was great and this one possibly even more so. I’m loving the hard edges, the view of an agency being created on the go to deal with a mysterious enemy, and the ongoing mysteries of the UFOs. Because SHADO exists to fight a single (u)foe, and are learning as they go, it gives this series a slightly different flavor than, say, UNIT. I took a step back from instagram for a few days this week, so I am behind on talking about book & audiobooks I’ve been listening to. I finished this Judge Dredd Crime Chronicles story last night. This one is unique, I think, in that it’s told from Dredd’s perspective. I loved @bigfinishprod’s full cast @2000adcomic audios and was sad when they ended. When they brought back Dredd in their enhanced audiobook format, I bought them all, but somehow didn’t get around to listening to them until now. I love Karl Urban’s portrayal of Dredd in the movie of the same name, and I was surprised by Joseph Fiennes work in the America audiobook and how it seemed initially jarring but grew on me. But the Dredd voice I will always hear when I read the comics is that of Toby Longworth, so it was fantastic to hear him again. The very next @bigfinishprod audio story was another Stargate tale, this time from Atlantis, featuring Dr Zelenka. I’ve been a fan of David McIntee’s writing since his Doctor Who novels, and this had a lot of heart to it. And with the current war in Ukraine, Radek’s backstory made this feel sadly relevant again. But I wish some of the story elements hadn’t been so similar to Lines of Communication, or that I hadn’t happened to listen to one after the other.
