It’d be really interesting if they met pre Barry becoming the Flash, for a few reasons but one is at the forefront of my mind. Sam would believe him about the man in yellow. And not only would he believe it, he’d understand, in a way. But then you reach a really interesting contrast. Because here you have Barry, who’s dedicated his entire life since 11 years old to finding his mother’s killer and getting his dad out of prison. But meanwhile, Sam just… didn’t have that same dedication. His mom’s death was the catalyst for the events of pretty much his entire life till he left, but he was a literal baby when it happened, he didn’t have that same connection with her. Idk I just think it’d be interesting. They learn they have that in common but the way each other handled it was just, so different.

But onto other things, for that conversation to happen they obviously had to meet *somehow, and there’s a super natural (pun unintentional turned intentional) way for that to happen.

Barry’s on one of his usual ‘search for the impossible’ quests, when he runs into the wrong thing. *don’tdoitdon’tdoitdon’tdoit—* Fuck it, it’s my post and I’m allowed to self indulge. He happens to run into one of those monsters that kidnaps people before it kills them. Double fuck it: it hurts him a little bit during the kidnapping too.

What follows is the usual. Sam and Dean are hunting this monster, they find its lair, kill the monster, and save whoever it has captive— which ofc happens to be Barry. Actually, since this is supposed to be Barry and Sam focused; there’s two captives, and Dean rescues the other one prolly on the other side of the room. Sam questions him a little bit, makes sure he’s not too hurt, and has a real wtf moment when Barry tells him that not only is he from Central City (states away), but that he came here to investigate the thing they just killed. And he’s even more confused when Barry doesn’t even seem to know what a hunter is. Cue explanation leading into conversation from my first paragraph under the cut.

However long a distance, with Barry injured Sam and Dean are more comfortable with driving him to Central City than letting him take the train home. Barry has absolutely no objections. On the contrary, despite the whole kidnapping thing, Barry’s still a huge nerd about the ‘monsters are real’ thing, and that’s pretty endearing to Sam. Especially considering how most people react. Barry definitely asks a lot of questions, and Dean is very exasperated from the driver’s seat while Sam answers them. Meanwhile Barry def doesn’t mind having a road trip with a cute guy who hunts monsters for a living and seems to know more about the ‘impossible’ than anyone he’s ever met. Also the nerding out is relatively two-sided, crucially. Sam’s more enthusiastic than usual as he tells Barry about their world, despite all the pain its caused him. Barry’s excitement’s infectious it seems. And considering he didn’t know about monsters till today, Barry catches onto stuff scarily quick; with all of the research he’s done. Sam finds that very attractive. Dean notices this, and decides he’s back in hell.

They eventually reach Central City, and drop Barry off at his apartment. Dean tells him to be more careful about what he looks into from now on. As for Sam, there’s definitely a spark between them; but nothing would ever work and they both know it. And so they part ways. Also, I think it’s important to note, Barry does ~not~ heed Dean’s warning, and so, some amount of years later, he ends up in Star City in December of 2013.

Particle accelerator goes off. Unrelated to any of this, but there’s definitely discourse in the hunter community about whether metahumans are monsters or not (“they were human before that explosion happened…” “so are vampires till they’re bitten” that sort of thing). Taking note of that for Barry whump potential I mean what.

In 2016, Sam and Dean find themselves back in Central City. And who should they run into at the crime scene they infiltrate with their fake FBI badges?

After the inevitable Flash reveal from Barry (and after everyone decides to work together to stop this thing), I imagine the conversation between Barry and Sam goes something like this:

“So, did you ever find the person who killed your mom?”

“Yep. He was my idol and mentor. Also stalked me for fifteen years apparently. And he’s still alive, too. Did you beat Lucifer?”

“We did. I had to put myself in hell with him to do it. He also tortured me for years while we were there… He’s out now though. I’m fine. Anyways, you found the guy who really did it, so did you get your dad out of prison?”

“Yeah. He was free for about a year before another speedster killed him in the same place I watched my mom die. And he only did it so I would become like him, whatever the hell that means. Also my friends locked me in a 4x4 cell for wanting to kill him. I’m fine.”

“…Wanna make out instead of dealing with our problems?”

“That sounds great, yeah.”
