From Gene Vincent performing at a 1957 youth rally to combat gang violence as a response to the murder of a Chicago honor roll student, to Alan Freed's disastrous 1958 Boston concert, to Dick Clark's introducing of parent-approved clean-cut teen idols in the wake of the murder of a foreign exchange student at the University of Pennsylvania after a local dance party, this is the complete history of the "juvenile delinquency hysteria" linked with the 1950's mainstream's opposition to rock n' roll. We also show however, how the narrative of the 1950's juvenile delinquent was transformed into the campy, sanitized, family friendly (and entirely fictional) "greaser" of the 1970's "Fifties Nostalgia Fad," in order to sell repackaged rock n' roll as "oldies."
