80's Nostalgia
I am feeling nostalgic again for a time I was never around for...at all. I was born in 1992 but most of my friends know I really enjoy listening to '80s pop and rock songs. I really don't know where this came from because my friends growing up didn't share this obsession (?) with me. (My family members also don't listen to this kind of music.)
Anyway, I was listening to When In Rome's "The Promise" tonight and I was so sad because I feel like I want to go back to that time. For some reason I feel like that was a much simpler time. I mean, it was an easier time in terms of technology and school and whatnot (seriously) but for some reason I feel like life would have been easier then?
I am probably wrong (no, I'm just wrong) but maybe these songs I listen to make me feel like the '80s were a time when everyone made all kinds of mistakes (for example, some of the clothing), but it was okay to make them. Perhaps I am only thinking this way because the '80s are part of the past now. The present will always be harder no matter what era you are in.
I wonder if I would have found Christ if I were in the '80s. My life would have been completely different. My parents came to the United States (illegally) during that time; I don't think I would have been able to that had I been in their position. I would have stayed in Mexico and only spoken Spanish and P'urhépecha (indigenous language). I highly doubt I would have gone to college and even if I did, it would probably be completely different than here. Not just in terms of the era but the atmosphere; Mexico seems a whole lot more conservative (again, I'm probably being naïve).
I don't think I know exactly what I'm talking about because I have never lived in the 1980s or in Mexico (except for vacation).
I think my nostalgic feelings are for my time in high school when I thought I had an identity in the world. Of course, that washed away when I accepted Christ (because my identity with Christ is above any other one I may posses). That might be it though (sorry, I'm processing these feelings as I write this entry); I had maybe two friends who enjoyed listening to this music in high school and one in college. I sort of miss them; well, I really miss them, actually, but I can't speak to them anymore so maybe that's what makes me sad.
Oh well, I need to stop living in the past, right? I can't wish to be part of decade that happened so many years ago and I can't wish to still be in touch with the people I miss (though I miss them a lot tonight for some reason).
That's my rant. Goodnight.
P.S. If you have time, you should listen to "The Promise" by When In Rome. It's really good. I think anyone would like that song whether they are into '80s music or not because I hear it in stores a lot. Maybe you'll feel that nostalgic feeling I'm getting or you'll discover a really good song at the very least :)

Be careful... It's catchy.
