March 25th - Greek Independence day [🇬🇷]

On February 21st 1821, the Greeks would begin their nearly 10-year struggle against the Ottoman empire. Outnumbered, outgunned and suffering severe hunger, they would take up the mountains, engaging in guerilla warfare. The Greeks would often compare the enemy to the Persians; and therefore themselves to their ancestors, who too fought for their freedom many moons ago (499-479BC).

Yet, they couldn't help but be bound by the same curse: internal strife. In October, just two years after the declaration of war, Greece would enter a civil war, the first out of the four that would take place all the while the Greeks engaged in conflict against the Ottomans.

On February 3rd 1830, the sovereignty of the Greek state was recognised with the Treaty of London (Protocol of Independence). Yet, the struggle for freedom was not to end there...
