Battle of Chesma Begins – Russian Naval Triumph Over the Ottoman Fleet
On July 5, 1770, the first day of the three-day naval Battle of Chesma began off the western coast of Anatolia during the Russo-Turkish War (1768–1774). The confrontation pitted the Imperial Russian Navy against the Ottoman Empire’s fleet in one of the most decisive naval engagements of the 18th century. Though the Ottoman navy initially held a stronger presence in the Aegean, Russian forces under Admiral Grigory Spiridov and Count Alexei Orlov sought to challenge Ottoman dominance in the eastern Mediterranean.
Over the course of the battle, Russian tactics and the use of fire ships proved devastatingly effective. The engagement culminated in the destruction of much of the Ottoman fleet in Chesma Bay, marking a turning point in naval warfare in the region. The victory significantly weakened Ottoman naval power and enhanced Russia’s status as a rising maritime force, reshaping the balance of power in the Black Sea and Aegean regions.
