Skeletons Making Music (c. 1526) - Hans Lützelburger after Hans Holbein the Younger
Cette enluminure met en scène l'épisode biblique du "Songe de Salomon", tiré du "Premier Livre des Rois", 1523. Le jeune souverain y est représenté endormi dans un lit d'apparat, un moment charnière où Dieu lui apparaît en rêve au début de son règne pour tester ses intentions profondes.
Dieu le Père surgit des nuées dans le coin supérieur gauche, tenant un phylactère qui affiche la promesse divine : « POSTVLA QVOD VIS VT DEM TIBI » (« Demande ce que tu veux que je te donne »). Au lieu de réclamer la richesse, la gloire ou la mort de ses rivaux, Salomon choisit la sagesse pour guider son peuple.
Les rubans dorés qui s'entrelacent au-dessus du lit symbolisent ce dialogue spirituel et les pensées du roi. On y lit notamment son souhait de pouvoir « DISCERNERE INTER BONVM ET MALVM » (« discerner le bien du mal »), une requête qui touchera Dieu et lui vaudra une sagesse légendaire ainsi qu'une immense prospérité.
