finished 13 sentinels a little while ago and really liked her :)
It's not like we're going to get kaiju popping up !
It's so funny how in 13 Sentinels they fake you out by teasing that a lot of time has passed since the whole thing began, and then they act like they won't tell you how much time, and there's a mystery file that says 'uhhhhh we think there were at least 300 loops???'
But if you boot up the game after beating it and check the mystery files again, there's a new one you can unlock that bluntly tells you it's been roughly 20 million years.
The original Tomi said that their first successful terraforming attempt took 1,800 years, and another mystery file says you should take that into account when considering how long it's been since the start like 'ohhh well you know that's a *long* time and you can only really hazard general estimates of how long it takes, maybe it took a significantly different amount of time', and Tomi lamented that 1,800 years was apparently longer then she seemed to find ideal and at least moderately reasonable to hope for.
And sure, on the scale of humanity, 1,800 years *is* a long time, but we can't think of it like that. We have to think of it on a cosmological scale in a universe that's estimated to be 13.8 billion years old. Ok we're not on *that* high of a scale, but we're getting closer.
1,800 years is absolutely nothing in a span of 20 million. Calling it a blink of the eye would be extremely generous, but let's consider it for a minute anyway.
So given how varied and unpredictable the amount of time terraforming takes to get a planet to an ideally survivable state is, let's bump it up to 2,000 for the sake of simplicity. The cycle resets every 16 years like clockwork. Divide 2,000 by 16 and you get 125 cycles.
Well that's a lot, but still not close to 300+. (supposedly) The amount of time it took between then and now is (supposedly) difficult to gauge with what information we were given. So whooooo knows? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Ok so now let's see how that special mystery file looks on the scale of 20 million years. 20 million divided by 16 is 1,250,000. Over A MILLION cycles occured before they finally managed to escape.
So really that 'at least 300 loops' bit is looking like this:
Also hey, the chances that your fanfiction is coincidentally canon aren't so bad!
... Especially considering that there are other instances of this scenario occuring in other parts of the universe. Who knows how many or for how long they'll keep going.
