It is so hard to love and not love

To want to spend your life with someone

But know you might not be able

to give them what they want --

        what they need

It is so hard

to long for that

                   Simple Feeling

for the tender brushing of hands

for the late nights

                  and whispered giggles

for the quiet touches

                 and words gifted to you like birdsong

for the shared glances

for the way you understand

                 each other

for the ecstasies, the broken rules

for that feeling of forever being young

                forever living in the golden glow of childhood

What am I to do

when I feel between

                                friend and lover

when I long and yearn

  for that closeness and connection

                               that makes us

                                                       human

What am I to do

when I look at her

and feel
