“... is I…”
You grip at something, anything, turning your knuckles white as he makes you anticipate his next words while he murmurs against your lips like a cat toying with its prey.
“Is... I’m sorry.”
He feels his heart being torn from his chest the same way he pushes himself off of you. He can’t do it. Not when he knows you’re still your soulmate’s. Not when he knows you don’t love him.
He can’t do it. He loves you too much to do it.
“Jisung.”
He doesn’t know what to think as you wrap your arms around his neck and pull him forward to meet your lips with his own. His body reacts before his mind can catch up, molding himself against you, wrapping his hands behind your back and head, and withering upon your touch. Jisung has never felt such euphoria. He’s never felt such exuberance, such desire bursting from his chest, reaching every cell in his body, especially his lips. Oh, how his lips feel merged as one with yours! They feel like the key to his soul, unlocking his heart and reincarnating the love he had forgotten.
But this isn’t right. No. No matter how much he wants it to be-- no matter how much he wills it to be-- it isn’t. He can tell by the wetness of your cheeks and the way your fingers are curled shakingly into themselves behind his neck. He knows what this is: pity.
He doesn’t feel anything when he tears himself away from you this time. It is as if all his emotions just turned off the second his lips left yours. With a tight frown, he looks at your eyes to find exactly what he expected to find. Soundlessly, Jisung walks out the door. You don’t love him. Not when your eyes-- the same eyes that can hold all the stars in the galaxy in them-- only held guilt when you looked at him.
You bury your face in your hand and let out a deep sigh.
“Everything alright?”
You look up to see Hyunjin at the doorway. His smile seems off, but you are too distressed to realize.
“Yeah.” You offer a weak smile of your own. “Shall we go?”
“Go ahead first. I have a quick business to take care of,” he tells you.
You nod and leave the male in the room.
Once you are gone, Hyunjin lets his expression sink to the floor. He walks over to the window and bends to pick up a broken panel from the ground. It had fallen off when Jisung slammed his hand against the glass, just like the kid from a few days back said it would.
Hyunjin turns around to take in the entirety of the room. He had only been able to see a small snippet of it through the gap earlier, but it was enough.
It was enough to see his soulmate kissing his ex-best friend.
Since the hospital, Hyunjin has not been able to look you in the eyes. He deserves it, he supposes; he broke your heart first. Still, he can’t help but cling on with hope to the sight of your distraught face after the kiss. He clearly saw you initiate the action, yet it doesn’t seem to have gone well. Has Jisung fallen out of love? No, that’s impossible too.
Hyunjin leans over the kitchen counter, gritting his teeth in contemplation for the sixth time that day, when Jisung walks in for a glass of water. The younger wolf stops in his tracks and, upon seeing the other male, turns back around to leave.
“Wait,” calls Hyunjin.
“What?” Jisung sighs without turning back.
“I want to talk to you.”
“Well, I don’t.”
He begins walking again, but Hyunjin grabs his arm.
“Please,” Hyunjin insists. “It’s important.”
Jisung lets out another sigh; every time he looks at Hyunjin, he’s reminded of you, your touch, and your love that isn’t his.
“Fine, but I’m staying turned away.”
Hyunjin nods in agreement although he can’t be seen.
“I’m going to cut to the chase. Are you dating Y/N?”
Jisung scoffs, “Is that why you stopped me? To ask if she’s available?”
“What? No!” Hyunjin exclaims. “I know my boundaries.”
“Then why are you asking?”
“I, um, I saw what you two did at the hospital,” he confesses.
Jisung feels a panic rising in his chest; he doesn’t need Hyunjin to have another card against him.
Softly, Hyunjin continues, “I just wanted to know if she’s been happy with you.”
He sounds so sincere, reminding Jisung of what the two used to have. When his soulmate died, Hyunjin was the one always by his side, holding him and telling him that everything would be alright. His tone reminds him of how much he misses having someone to lean on, someone to cry on, especially during times like this.
Jisung hangs his head, and with a small voice, admits, “She’s not.”
“What?” Hyunjin furrows his brows.
“I mean she’s not happy with me. We’re not together.” His voice cracks in the last sentence. He has tried all he can to not appear weak in front of Hyunjin anymore, but this apparently is the limit.
“Oh.” Hyunjin feels a sudden pang from how broken his friend looks and sounds. He frowns at how ridiculous his previous worries are compared to what Jisung is going through. “I’m sorry.”
“For what?” Jisung laughs dryly. “It’s not your fault she’s your soulmate. It’s not your fault she’ll never love me back.”
Hyunjin steps closer, and Jisung either doesn’t mind or he doesn't notice. “No, I’m sorry for not having your back during this time. Or, well, I’m sorry for making you feel like I don’t. I realized I never apologized to you after what I did with Jiyoung even though you are one of the people my actions hurt the most. If anything, I made things even worse for you, so I want to apologize.”
“What?” Jisung scoffs, not believing his ears.
“I said I’m sorry,” he reiterates, “for being a bad person and an even worse friend. And I want to promise you that I won’t hurt you or Y/N ever again.”
Jisung finally turns around and scans Hyunjin’s gaze for honesty. When he finds what he is looking for, he slouches in posture with a sigh.
“You know, I’d be hurt if you got together with Y/N,” he teases tiredly.
“I-- We’re-- I mean, I’m not trying to do that! I know I stepped out of line a few times, but I know I don’t deserve her anymore!” Hyunjin stutters flusteredly.
Jisung lets out a low chuckle and pats the other wolf on the shoulder. “I’ve come to realize I don’t know who deserves what when it comes to soulmates anymore. All I know is that just like you’re the only one who can hurt Y/N the way you did, you’re also the only one who can make her happy in a way no one else can. If she lets you into her heart again, then…” Jisung lets out a sigh of resignation. “What can I do?”
Hyunjin tilts his head to the side. “You really love her, don’t you.”
An eye roll. “You better do the same, you dumb dog.”
The brown wolf laughs and holds out his arms. “Wanna cry about stuff now? ‘Things feel better when you let them out.’”
Jisung stares at him, the corner of his lip twitching.
You aren’t sure why Hyunjin seemed so busy for the past few weeks, but you are thankful he is talking to you again, especially since his daughter is growing quickly and is in desperate need of new clothes.
“Going to the mall?”
Hyunjin stops his search for his keys to look at his friend. “Yeah…” He sounds nervous, and Jisung can already guess why.
As if on cue, you walk through the front door and hand Hyunjin the car keys he was looking for.
“She’s all buckled in,” you tell him. Upon noticing Jisung, you give him a small smile. “Hi, Jisung.”
“Hi,” he returns, ruffling your hair.
You let out a yelp in protest but allow him to do as he pleases as you unzip Hyunjin’s baby bag to ensure that everything’s there.
“Where’s Fluff Jr.?” you ask Hyunjin, referring to his daughter’s stuffed animal.
“It’s in the glove department; she left it in the car last time.”
“Are you sure? You know how she’s like in new places without it.”
“It’s there. If anything, we can check later,” Hyunjin assures you.
Jisung lets out a raw chuckle at the scene in front of him. “Well you two should hurry. I don’t think toddlers do very well by themselves in the back of a car.”
You nod in agreement and head for the car. “See you later, Jisung!”
“See you,” echos Hyunjin before skedaddling after you.
Jisung shoots some finger guns and watches as the three of you pull out of the drive-way. It’s for the best, he supposes. You still see him as your friend, and he got to tell you his feelings. He looks down at his barren wrist. So then why does it still hurt so much?
“Oo, such a cute young couple,” coos an old sales lady at the baby store.
“We’re not actually together,” you try to tell her.
“No need to be shy! People are getting married earlier and earlier these days. Besides, couples who come together get 20% off their purchase!”
“Yeah, don’t be shy, Dear.”
You feel Hyunjin’s hand slide across your back and down your arm, and you nearly drop his daughter in surprise.
Hyunjin is beyond shocked by his own boldness too. He’ll have to buy himself a new pair of pants after this store, but your softness and warmth under his fingertips makes it all worth it.
The old lady titters at your blushes. “If you don’t mind, I’d like for another representative to help you as I take my lunch.” She heads towards the back, calling, “Jiyoung! Beloved customers!”
You and Hyunjin exchange looks. It couldn’t be, right? But of course, what story would this be if it wasn’t?
“‘Beloved customers’ indeed,” you hear a sneer.
Hyunjin’s arm slowly drops from yours. “Hi, Jiyoung,” he greets weakly, rubbing his hands together.
To your astonishment, Jiyoung’s lips spread into a smile. It is a customer service smile, but still a smile nonetheless. “Are we looking for anything specific today?”
“Just anything for her to wear. She’s grown out of all her old clothes,” you answer.
“They grow so quickly when they’re this age, don’t they? Well I have just the thing.”
At some point, you are with Jiyoung looking through the racks as Hyunjin’s switching his daugher in and out of outfits on the dressing table, avoiding his ex and the emotions that come with her. As you shift over some hangers, you look down and notice Jiyoung’s shirt straining against her tummy.
“How long have you two been together?” she asks in a sweet voice. Lower, she adds, “Or are you even together?”
“We’re not,” you decide to admit.
“Good,” she chirps. “You should stay away from that freak and his monster child.”
“She’s not a monster and he’s not a freak.”
“Seriously?” scoffs Jiyoung. “After all they’ve done to me, you still defend him?”
“All I know is that he gave you a child that you asked for and you left him with her,” you calmly retort. You feel anger bubbling; an emotion you aren’t too accustomed to. “True, he should have explained the dangers beforehand, but you still wanted the child after the truth was revealed.”
“So you do love him!” she accuses. It’s the only reason she can come up with as to why you’re defending him. “Save you time, Honey. Look at how pathetic he is around me. He’s never getting over me.”
“I’m not in love with him,” you insist again. “Remember that he’s hurt me like he’s hurt you.”
“What are you saying?” she snarls.
“I’m saying that I can’t believe you left a six-month old motherless for your own selfishness and not feel a single shred of remorse for it,” you state plainly.
“Doesn’t matter since she has a witch like you to be her mom now!” She’s practically shouting with rage.
“I advise against using such language with customers,” you warn.
“YOU THINK I CARE?”
You watch her swing her hand up and towards you. You lift your own arms up in front of your face, bracing for the blow, but it doesn’t come.
“Hyunjin?” you hear her laugh. You look up and see your soulmate standing in front of you, arm veins popping from the grip he has on Jiyoung.
“Let me go,” Jiyoung orders.
“No.”
“Let go, Sweetie,” she sings with a threatening undertone and raising her other fist.
“Try it.” You’ve never heard Hyunjin sound like this: calm but not without a growl in the back of his throat. “Try it. Hit me and I’ll call security, but if you lay so much as a finger on her, I’ll dislocate your arms so bad, you could put them in the opposite socket.”
“F-fine.” Jiyoung snatches her hand back. “Leave. I don’t want to service you two.”
Hyunjin continues glaring at the woman. You can tell he’s starting to turn by the fur dusting his cheeks, so you take his daughter and pull on his hand. “Come on.”
“Alright,” he nods to you. As you make your way to the door, Hyunjin pauses and throws behind his shoulder, “By the way, I counted four CCTV’s in this store. I wonder what your boss is going to do when the police show up later asking to see the tapes. Oh, and I’ve heard about your little ‘incident’ at your research lab. You know, Jiyoung, you should really stop trying to have kids. You can’t hold a career together, let alone a family. Don’t think I didn’t notice that bump under your shirt. Or did you just get fat?”
You think you’re losing count of how many surprises Hyunjin has shocked you with today.
