“This right here,” he said, “is the oldest market in Northern Nigeria.”
He thought about it for a second, then added, “possibly in the entire country.”
“It’s close to a thousand years old,” he said. “Dates back to the trans-saharan trade days.”
For some reason, “trans-saharan” makes me think of slavery.
“You know Moroccan leather?” he asked. I nodded even though I didn’t know what Moroccan leather was. What I knew was that his question was rhetorical.
“In truth, it’s actually more like West-African leather,” he said. “Arabs used to purchase leather from this very market and take it with them to Morocco. Europeans gave it the name ‘Moroccan Leather’ because that’s where they got it from.”
“If you ask nicely, they’ll show you some of the places where they sold the things they sold from back in the day,” he said. “The shopkeepers themselves will show you, or they’ll ask a kid to take you to the places where, in the 15th century, people came to purchase pottery, leather, and sometimes, slaves.”
MONDAY.
