@hxgure said: brow arched, he paused for a moment. âwhatâs the most sinister thing at the supermarket?â words dragged out from lips in a low, hoarse tone. doubtful and confused at her accusation in regards to the supermarket, nicolas was curious as to what exactly was the most sinister thing at a place like this. nothing but harmless older folk, save for a few energetic ankle biters. maybe someone had a few too many. it wouldn't be the first time he was in company of a very drunk cherry. /sentence meme B)
When his brows arched, hers furrowed. He was a taciturn man, and not without reason, so when it came time for him to speak like this, he certainly couldnât have minced words. âDonât repeat it. You make me sound like a dummy.â Her fingers crossed. âItâs really sinister, okay? Itâs totally sinister.â How well could he read lips? If she launched into a full tirade, would he keep up? She rolled her eyes. Her arms alternated between crossing and resting with her fists on her hips. Her lips puckered as she tapped her toe. There had to be an elegant way to say it.
âItâs the sample people.â Cherry huffed. âTheyâre so insidious!â
She locked eyes with him to make sure he was on the same wavelength. âSee, it starts off real simple, right? Why not try a bite of the product? Itâs there for the tasting! Itâs free real estateâthereâs no law saying you canât walk off with every sample on the tray! But it is frowned upon. Thatâs not the point.â
A thumb and forefinger pinched between her brows. âAnyway, itâs a trap. You think youâre home free, so slick, got to try a new product, or maybe even a food you already like and you just wanted another taste. But itâs no good at that point, no sir! They got you hooked. Youâre in their domain now. Any power you had is gone. G-O-N-E. Those sample people, theyâre a smart bunch. They know youâre human and that youâre capable of feeling guilt. Thatâs what they bank on.â She waggled a finger.
âNow that you ate something, you gotta buy something or else you look bad. No one wants to be the ass that stands there munching samples and asks about the product, then just walks off. Thatâs a surefire way to make the workers hate you. And you know what happens if they hate you, right? The news, it spreads. Soon enough, that cashier you were so buddy-buddy with, the one that occasionally gives you coupons or hooks you up with discounts, she decides that youâre above all that. Surely youâve got money, you can pay full price. Why not, right? You saved all that money not buying samples. So now youâve lost your insider! Youâre just like any other customerâyou got nothing.â Even if he canât hear her tone of voice, itâs clear from her posture and the red tint to her skin that sheâs ready to blow up.
âThatâs why these sample ladies and sample gents are so sinister. You think youâre getting away with stealing, but really youâre destroying the web of connections you made around the market. So thatâs why we donât eat samples. Got it, Nic?â
