i'm still alive i've just been so busy and tired with the holidays and haven't had the chance to fill up my queue again yet, hopefully i'll be able to do that soon but in the meantime know i am still around even if you don't see me π«‘
hi! referring to your pinned, can you explain why ppl might think idolverse rps are problematic? thanks!!
oh boy HAHA this is a massive topic and one i don't feel totally equipped to answer accurately since i'm a person that doesn't have a problem with it! but i'll do my best to explain from what i understand! this answer also got super long so i'm going to put it under a readmore π
i think the main thing it boils down to is people finding krps/kpop-idolverse rps to be fetishizing east asians, and that not allowing faceclaims of other races is shitty, especially in non-idolverse krps where there's no reason for that to be the case. there's also an aspect of krpers commonly disregarding and disrespecting the faceclaims' culture, just because they want to rp kpop idols or other east asian faceclaims, and don't want to put the work in to do the research and create characters that are realistic and respectful to east asian culture. i personally totally get that tbh, and i understand why people are against it, which is why i say what i do in my pinned
i think some people also think krp stands for "korean roleplay" which WOULD be super duper weird, but i think people in the community know it as "kpop roleplay;" at least that's what it's always meant to me. but tbh, when you think about it, people exclusively rping one race Is pretty weird. from my perspective, though, kpop is like a fandom, and people that are part of that fandom like rping people/faceclaims from their fandom, just as is the case in any other fandom. for me, it has nothing to do with race, but you could also totally argue that's problematic to some degree too, because race is vital to people's identity and the right thing to do is be aware of that, and respect and honor that to the best of our ability. it is important to remember that we are roleplaying real people (not as themselves, but you know what i mean) and that our faceclaims aren't Just characters, too, but that's probably a whole other thing to talk about!!
i think some people also think kpop as a whole is weird and fetishizes east asians as well, and feel that rping and glorifying that is problematic in itself, which i can also see tbh!
nobody asked for my personal stance on it but for me, i've considered all of this and kinda agonized over it and in the end thought to myself. am i REALLY hurting anyone by rping in a kpop idolverse rp with characters that i do my best to make realistic and respectful to the faceclaim? is it worth turning something that is supposed to just be a fun hobby into a miserable experience for myself just because people might think i'm problematic for it? ultimately my answer to those questions was no, and different people will have different answers to those questions, and that's okay! it's just a thing people are going to disagree on, but i personally didn't even know the majority of the rpc didn't like krpers for a looooong time and i think it's definitely a good thing to be aware of so we can learn and be better. so ty for asking!!
i think i'm also forgetting some reasons but hopefully this helps to some degree! this is lowkey scary to talk about because some people are very passionate about this topic, but i think ultimately these conversations are important to have. so with that in mind if anyone has anything to add feel free to send me an ask! disagreeing w me is totally fine and i would actually be interested to hear your perspective, but if you're rude i won't be posting it. if we want to have a conversation let's keep it constructive π
accidentally abandoned this blog for a little while because i had covid and couldn't take off work and also had legitimately 8 assignments due this week but i refilled my queue and hopefully i won't forget to continue keeping up with it now π
